WACO, Texas --- Kirsten Shortridge tossed a four-hit shutout as the No. 8 Baylor softball team rebounded from a loss in game one of the series with a 3-0 win over No. 21 Missouri in action at Getterman Stadium on Sunday. With the win, Baylor improved to 43-12 overall, 12-3 in Big 12 play, and moves back into a tie for first-place in the Big 12 Conference standings with Missouri, who fell to 36-20, 12-3 in league play, with the loss.
Shortridge led the way for the Lady Bears, allowing only five Missouri batters to reach base as the freshman tossed her second shutout of the season to improve to 15-3 on the year. For the contest, the right-hander allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out three in seven innings of work.
For the second straight day, Baylor jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as the Lady Bears scored a pair of runs in bottom of the second inning. With runners at first and third and only one out, Courtney Oberg delivered a single through the right-side of the infield, scoring Alex Colyer from third to give Baylor the early 1-0 lead.
Miriam Romero followed with another RBI single as the senior delivered with a hit to center field, scoring Tiffany Wesley to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bears would put the final touches on the win with a run in the fourth as Ashley Monceaux singled to left to score Oberg from third to give Baylor a three-run cushion.
The lead was more than enough for Shortridge who retired the Tigers in the seventh to notch the win as the Lady Bears moved back into a tie for first-place with Missouri heading into the final two games of the season this upcoming week.
Wins by the Lady Bears against Texas A&M and Texas at home this week will assure Baylor of at least a tie for the Big 12 Conference regular season championship.
After picking up the victory on Saturday, Jen Bruck took the loss for Missouri and fell to 18-7 on the year after allowing three runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
Batting in the leadoff position for only the second time this year, Monceaux led the attack at the plate with a pair of hits as Shortridge and Oberg also posted two hits in the win.
After the contest, Baylor players Lisa Ferguson, Chelsi Lake, Monceaux and Romero were honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
Baylor will return to action on Tuesday, May 1, as the Lady Bears host No. 5 Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m.
