WACO, Texas --- The No. 9 Baylor softball team continued its winning ways as the Lady Bears pushed their win streak to 13 games with an 11-3, run-rule victory over Oklahoma State in action at Getterman Stadium on Sunday. With the victory, Baylor swept the series from the Cowgirls and improved to 39-9 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma State saw its record fall to 24-24 on the season, 2-7 in conference play with the loss.
Freshman Kirsten Shortridge led the way for the Lady Bears in the victory, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while tossing four innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits to improve to 13-3 on the season.
The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Courtney Totte and Kim Kaye in the first inning; however, it would be all Baylor the rest of the way as the Lady Bears would win their 13th straight contest.
Baylor cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning as Ashley Monceaux delivered a RBI single up the middle to score Brette Reagan from second base. The Lady Bears would tie the game with another run in the second as Alex Colyer delivered a RBI single to score Shortridge from third.
After Oklahoma State was unable to regain the lead in the third, Baylor exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game. Fielding miscues would prove costly for the Cowgirls in the frame as the first seven Baylor batters reached base and scored in the inning to put the game away.
Miriam Romero got things started for the Lady Bears as she delivered a two-run single up the middle to make the score 4-2. After a throwing error by the first baseman allowed Shortridge to score for the third run of the inning, Colyer delivered another RBI single to score Romero and give the Lady Bears a four-run cushion.
Courtney Oberg made the score 7-2 when she scored on a throwing error by the catcher as Brette Reagan delivered a two-run single up the middle to give the Lady Bears a 9-2 advantage.
Monceaux put the finishing touches on the inning as she delivered an opposite field, two-run blast over the left center field wall for her 13th home run of the season.
The nine-run outburst by the Baylor offense was the most in an inning for the Lady Bears since BU scored nine runs in the second in an 18-3 win over Oklahoma Christian on March 2, 2005.
Oklahoma State would manage only one run the rest of the way as Brittany Turner came into the game in relief of Shortridge to retire the side in the fifth as the Lady Bears picked up their fifth-straight victory over the Cowgirls.
Anna Whiddon took the loss for Oklahoma State and fell to 10-8 on the season after allowing ten runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Baylor will return to action on Tuesday, April 17, when the Lady Bears travel to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas in a non-conference game at 5:00 p.m.
