AUSTIN, Texas --- Lisa Ferguson tossed a four-hit shutout as the No. 9 Baylor softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games and remained perfect in Big 12 Conference play as the Lady Bears cruised past No. 11 Texas, 6-0, in action at McCombs Field on Wednesday. With the victory, Baylor improved to 37-9 overall, 7-0 in the Big 12 Conference, while Texas fell to 28-11, 3-5 in conference play, with the loss.
"We had some really good at-bats and Lisa (Ferguson) threw extremely well," head coach Glenn Moore. "To finish the road swing with a perfect record is really a credit to the team. I think they will all be excited to return home; and, hopefully, we can continue to play well."
After a scoreless first four innings, Baylor finally broke through in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with one out, sophomore Brette Reagan found herself in a 0-2 hole. But, the third baseman fouled several pitches off before working the count full. Reagan finally drew a walk to allow Danielle Honnette to score from third for the first run of the game.
The Lady Bears would extend the lead on the next batter as Ashley Monceaux flew out deep to left, bringing home Tiffany Wesley to give Baylor a two-run advantage.
Senior Chelsi Lake would then deliver the key hit of the contest, lining a single down the right-field home as Jordan Daniels, who had a key pinch-hit in the inning, and Reagan scored easily to give the Lady Bears a four-run cushion.
After Texas was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, Kelsey Sage lined a solo home run over the left field fence, her fifth of the season, to knock Texas starting pitcher Meagan Denny out of the contest and give Baylor a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Bears finished the scoring with a single run in the seventh as Monceaux crossed the plate when Kirsten Shortridge stole second as the throw got away from the shortstop to give Baylor a six-run advantage.
The lead was more than enough for Ferguson, who tossed her seventh shutout of the season and 27th of her career as she improved to 17-4 on the season after allowing only four hits and no walks while striking out three.
Denny took the loss and fell to 18-10 on the year after allowing five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work.
With the win, Baylor claimed victories at Texas A&M and at Texas for the first time in school history as the Lady Bears improved to 6-14 all-time against the Longhorns.
Sage and Lake led the way with two hits apiece as Baylor out-hit Texas, 9-4, for the contest.
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, April 14, as the Lady Bears return to the friendly confines of Getterman Stadium to host Oklahoma State for the start of a two-game series at 2:00 p.m.
