HONOLULU, Hawai'i. - The No. 10 Baylor softball team fell behind early and was unable to fully recover as No. 25 Cal claimed a 10-6 victory over the Lady Bears in the opening day of action at the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational on Wednesday. With the loss, Baylor falls to 24-6 on the season while Cal improves to 19-10 on the year with the win.
Despite trailing by seven with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after Cal scored an unearned run in the top of the inning to make the score 10-3, Baylor would mount a two-out rally to put the tying run at the plate. Tiffany Wesley got the rally as she delivered a two-run single down the right field line to cut the lead to five.
When Brette Reagan delivered a bases loaded single to cut the lead to four, Baylor brought up the tying run to the plate. However, Cal pitcher Marissa Drewrey managed to coax a ground out to end the game as the Golden Bears picked up the 10-6 win to improve to 6-1 all-time against the Lady Bears.
Cal jumped out to an early lead in the first with a single run in the top of the inning when Ericka Racklin scored on a wild pitch to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears would extend the lead to three in the third as Katie Vickers delivered a two-run single up the middle to push the Golden Bear lead to 3-0.
After Baylor was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, Cal built a seven-run cushion with four runs in the fourth. Julie Meyer led off the inning with a home run before Alex Sutton's solo blast with one out made the score 5-0. Gina Leomiti and Bernice Masaniai then delivered back-to-back RBI singles to build a sizeable 7-0 advantage.
Baylor managed to cut the lead to five in the bottom of the inning as Ashley Monceaux delivered a two-run home run to right field, scoring Nicole Wesley from first, to make the score 7-2.The home run was the team-leading eighth of the season for the senior and the 16th of her career.
After Cal scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 9-2 cushion, Chelsi Lake provided the highlight of the Lady Bears day, blasting a solo home run, her fifth of the season, over the center field wall for her 39th career home run as she broke Kelly Osburn's career record of 38 to become the school's all-time leader.
Lisa Ferguson took the loss for Baylor and fell to 10-4 on the season after allowing four earned runs and eight hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Lauren Frankiewicz picked up the win to improve to 8-4 on the season after allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings of work.
Drewrey pitched to one batter in the seventh and recorded her first save of the season.
Baylor will return to action on day two of the Hawai'i Invitational when the Lady Bears face Nevada at 9:00 p.m. before a meeting with the host, No. 23 Hawai'i, at 11:00 p.m.
