\WACO, Texas --- Brette Reagan's five RBI performance in game one coupled with Kirsten Shortridge's complete game victory in game two highlighted a pair of victories for No. 18 Baylor in day two of the Getterman Classic on Saturday. Baylor (4-0) defeated Stephen F. Austin, 9-3, in game one before posting a 5-1 win over Kentucky in game two.
In game one against Stephen F. Austin, Baylor trailed 3-0 after the Ladyjacks posted three unearned runs in the top of the third inning. The Lady Bears would respond; however, scoring nine unanswered runs the rest of the way en route to a six-run victory.
Regan began the rally for the Lady Bears in the bottom of the inning as she delivered a two-run double, scoring Tiffany Wesley and Alex Colyer as Baylor cut the lead to one, 3-2.
After a scoreless fourth, Colyer delivered the game-tying blast in the bottom of the fifth as she led off the inning with a home run on the first pitch over the left field wall to knot the score at 3-3. The home run was the second of the season for the sophomore as Baylor would soon take the lead.
With Nicole Wesley on third base, Reagan delivered her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score the runner from third and give the Lady Bears a one-run advantage. Chelsi Lake then gave the Lady Bears a little bit of a cushion as she delivered a blast over the right-center field wall for her first home run of the season to make the score 5-3.
With the Ladyjacks unable to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth inning, Baylor broke the game open in the bottom of the frame, exploding for four runs and taking a six-run advantage. Reagan delivered a two-run double as Ashley Monceaux and Kelsey Sage added RBI singles in the frame to make the score 9-3.
It was more than enough for relief pitcher Lisa Ferguson as the senior retired the side in the top of the seventh as she picked up the win in the contest and moved to 2-0 on the season after three scoreless innings of relief work, allowing only one hit while striking out four.
Brittany Turner pitched well while picking up a no-decision after allowing three unearned runs in four innings of work while striking out two Stephen F. Austin batters.
Reagan led the way for Baylor in the win, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI as Shortridge added three more hits in the victory.
Ashley Wilburn took the loss for the Ladyjacks, allowing nine runs on 13 hits in six innings of work.
In the second game, Baylor picked up a hard fought victory, scoring four runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie as the Lady Bears moved into sole possession of first place in the Getterman Classic with a 5-1 win over Kentucky.
After a scoreless first, Lake put the Lady Bears on the board with a solo shot over the left-center field wall to give Baylor a 1-0 lead. The blast was the second of the day for Lake as the senior now has 36 for her career to move within three home runs shy of the Baylor career record held by Kelly Osburn (2003-2006, 38).
Kentucky managed to tie the game in the fifth and threatened to take the lead; however, with a runner at third and one out, Reagan made an incredible diving stop at third base and managed to throw out Kentucky's Molly Johnson at home to keep the score tied.
Baylor would then break the score open in the sixth as the Lady Bears posted four runs on the board to take a 5-1 lead. The Lady Bears took the lead on a perfectly executed steal of home as Reagan got caught in a rundown between first and second while T. Wesley broke for home and slid just under the tag of Katie Campbell as Baylor grabbed a one-run advantage.
Monceaux then put the finishing touches on the pair of wins with a towering three-run shot into the trees down the right field line, scoring Lake and Reagan, as Baylor grabbed a four-run edge. The home run was the third of the season for Monceaux as the Baylor team has hit 10 home runs through the first four games this year.
Shortridge, making her first career appearance in the circle, retired the side in the top of the seventh as the freshman picked up her first, complete game victory, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven as she moved to 1-0 on the season.
Jennifer Young took the loss for Kentucky, allowing three runs in one-third of an inning of relief as she fell to 2-1 on the year.
Baylor will finish play at the Getterman Classic on Sunday, Feb. 11, when the Lady Bears face Kentucky at 9:00 a.m. before closing out the tournament against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1:00 p.m.
