Box Score
WACO, Texas - The No. 18 Baylor softball team dropped a pitcher's duel on Saturday as Kansas outlasted the Lady Bears 2-1 in 11 innings in action at Getterman Stadium. With the loss, Baylor falls to 24-15, 4-3 in conference play as the Jayhawks improve to 21-18, 2-4 in Big 12 play with the win.
Baylor starter
Lisa Ferguson and Kansas pitcher Kassie Humphreys kept both line-ups in check throughout as neither team managed a run through the first 10 innings of play. Kansas had the best chances to score through the first 10 innings as the Jayhawks threatened to grab the early lead in the fifth. With runners on second and third an no outs, Ferguson managed to retire the next three batters in order, forcing Jessica Moppin into a pop out to end the inning as the score remained tied at 0-0.
As the teams went into extra innings, the international tie breaker went into effect in the 10th as both teams were allowed to start the inning with a runner at second base. After Kansas was unable to score in the top of the inning, Baylor had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the frame. However, Humphreys prevented a Baylor run from crossing the plate as the game went into the 11th with no score.
The Jayhawks finally broke through for the first runs of the game in the 11th as Serena Settlemier hit her Big 12 leading 17th home run of the season, scoring Nettie Fierros from third as Kansas grabbed a 2-0 lead.
Baylor tried to mount a rally in the seventh as
Jordan Daniels hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring
Chelsi Lake from third, as the Lady Bears cut the lead to 2-1. On the play, the Kansas left fielder dropped the ball, allowing Daniels to reach second as the Lady Bears had a runner in scoring position with only one out. Humphreys struck out the next two batters; however, as Kansas ended a five-game losing streak to Baylor.
Ferguson pitched well in the loss for Baylor, allowing only one earned run on seven hits while striking out nine in 11 innings of work as she fell to 13-9 on the season.
Humphreys picked up the win for Kansas after allowing only two hits and one unearned run as she improved to 9-12 on the year.
Baylor will look to pick up the series split when the teams meet on Sunday, April 9, at 12:00 p.m.
