WACO, Texas - The No. 19 Baylor softball team fought hard; however, came up just short in a wild start to the Big 12 Conference season as the Lady Bears fell to No. 15 Texas A&M, 4-3, in eight innings at action at Getterman Stadium on Wednesday. With the loss, Baylor falls to 18-13 on the season, 0-1 in Big 12 Conference play, as Texas A&M improves to 21-9, 1-0 in conference play, with the win.
"We had some warriors out there today," head coach Glenn Moore said. "After coming out flat against Georgia Tech last night, we went head-to-head with the defending conference champion and I could not be prouder of the way the team played."
Baylor got on the board first with a run in the second inning as Miriam Romero's double down the left field line scored Ashley Monceaux to give the Lady Bears the early 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M tied the game with a run in the third and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Jamie Hinshaw doubled to score Patti Wunderlich to give the Aggies the lead.
The score remained the same heading into Baylor's final at-bat as Kelly Osburn came to the plate to lead-off the bottom of the seventh inning. The senior responded by blasting a solo home run over the right-center field wall, her fifth of the season and 28th of her career, as the Lady Bears tied the game at 2-2.
Texas A&M starting pitcher Amanda Scarborough held the Lady Bears without a run the rest of the inning as the game headed into extras.
Rocky Spencer gave the Aggies the lead with two outs in the inning as she lifted her second home run of the season over the left field wall as the two-run blast gave Texas A&M a 4-2 lead.
Baylor refused to go quietly; however, as Tessa Lynam led off the bottom of the inning with her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to cut the lead to one.
After Scarborough got the next two Baylor batters out, the Lady Bears tried to mount a two-out rally. Kylie Conroy started things off by legging out an infield single as Romeo drew a two-out walk to give Baylor runners at first and second with two outs.
Osburn stepped up to the plate and smashed a 3-2 pitch down the first base line; however, Texas A&M first baseman Megan Gibson made a tremendous back-handed catch to give the Aggies the win and send the Lady Bears to the hard fought loss.
Lisa Ferguson took the loss after eight, solid innings of work, allowing three earned runs on seven hits as she fell to 9-7 on the season.
Scarborough picked up the win for Texas A&M as she allowed three runs on nine hits in eight innings to improve to 9-4 on the year.
Monceaux led the way for Baylor with two hits, both doubles, as the Lady Bears out-hit the Aggies 9-7 on the night.
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, March 25, when the Lady Bears host Texas Tech for the start of a two-game series beginning at 2:00 p.m.
