LAREDO, Texas - The No. 4 Baylor mens golf team shot a final-round 294 for a 54-hole total of 855 to take a four-stroke victory and defend its title at the Border Olympics Saturday at the Laredo Country Club.
Senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) finished second with a total of 204, firing back-to-back rounds of 67, followed by a 70 in the final round. Baca now has 25 career top-10 finishes, one behind the school's all-time leader, Jimmy Walker. Baca's 16 top-five finishes are also only three behind Walker.
Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) and sophomore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) tied for seventh with a total of 216. Alcorn shot 74, 69, 73 while Williams shot 74, a career-low 67 and 75.
Junior Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas) tied for 32nd with a total of 222 (71-72-79) while junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) tied for 36th, shooting 223 (74-73-76).
The Bears finished five strokes ahead of Memphis and seven strokes ahead of UT-Arlington. Baca finished one stroke behind Memphis' Keven Fortin-Simard.
The Bears' group that competed at the Bearkat Classic hosted by Sam Houston State also claimed an 11-stroke victory at Raven's Nest Golf Course in Huntsville, Texas.
Baylor shot a 54-hole total of 866 (295-282-289) to finish ahead of Oklahoma Christian (877), UT-Pan American (885), St. Edwards (889) and Texas A&M (889).
Junior Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) finished second at 211 (72-70-69), falling by one stroke to UT-Pan Am's Craig Berger.
Redshirt freshman Carmine Mediate (Southlake, Texas) tied for 10th, redshirt freshman Bill Allcorn (Abilene, Texas) tied for 14th, sophomore Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) tied for 19th and sophomore Matt Briggs (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 21st.
Baylor returns to action April 3-4 at the Morris Williams Invitational at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.
