PALM SPRINGS, Calif. --- The No. 18 Baylor softball team established a new season-high with 17 hits as the Lady Bears cruised to an 11-4 victory over Long Island in the final day of action at the Palm Springs Classic. With the victory, Baylor improved to 9-5 on the season and finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Chelsi Lake put the Lady Bears up early as she lifted a two-out, three-run home run, her second of the season, down the left field line to give Baylor the early 3-0 lead.
Baylor pitching briefly lost control in the second inning, allowing four walks and three runs to score on wild pitches as Long Island tallied four runs in the frame to take a brief one-run lead.
The Lady Bears' bats quickly responded in the bottom of the inning as Harmony Schwethelm hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
Following the second inning, Baylor pitching settled down as the Baylor hitters took control of the game. A RBI double by Lake followed by a RBI single by Jordan Daniels gave the Lady Bears a 6-4 lead heading into the fourth.
A four-run fourth put the game away for the Lady Bears as Ashley Monceaux and Lauren Parker each delivered two-out, two-run hits to give Baylor a 10-4 advantage.
Baylor would add a run in the sixth on a steal of home by Kylie Conroy as Lisa Ferguson shut down Long Island in the top of the seventh as the Lady Bears went on to claim an 11-4 win.
Ferguson picked up the victory to improve to 5-1 on the season after not allowing a hit while striking out three in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Sarah Hausner also pitched well in the win, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out two in two innings of work.
Monceaux led the Baylor attack, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI as the outing marked only the 20th time a player has recorded four hits in a game in school history; and, the first to accomplish the feat since Kim Wilmoth collected four hits in a win over Kansas on April 16, 2005.
Lake added three hits, two runs and four RBI as six Baylor batters recorded multiple-hit games in the win.
Jenny Giles took the loss for Long Island (2-7) after allowing 11 runs on 17 hits in six innings of work.
Baylor will return to action on Wednesday, March 1, when the Lady Bears host Texas State in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
