Ferguson's Shutout Earns Split for Softball

WACO, Texas --- After falling 5-2 to Wichita State to open the day, the No. 10 Baylor softball team rebounded behind Lisa Ferguson's shutout performance with a 5-0 victory over Tulsa to conclude the Getterman Classic. With the split, Baylor moves to 2-2 on the season.
In game one, Baylor jumped on Wichita State early as Chelsi Lake doubled to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Kelly Osburn, as the Lady Bears grabbed the early lead.
Baylor extended the lead to two in the third when Tessa Lynam hit a double down the left field line, scoring Harmony Schwethelm from first as the Lady Bears claimed a two-run lead.
Wichita State responded; however, with five runs in the fourth as the Shockers managed to grab control of the game. Four Shockers recorded RBI singles in the inning as Baylor found itself down by three runs heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Bears were unable to mount a comeback in the contest as the Shockers' Britnee Barnett held Baylor scoreless the rest of the way, earning the complete game victory after allowing two runs on nine hits to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Brittany Turner (0-1) took the loss for Baylor after allowing four earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.
After replacing Turner in the fifth inning, Baylor's Sarah Hausner pitched well in relief, keeping Wichita State within striking distance after allowing only one hit and no runs in three innings of work.
Osburn led the Baylor attack in the loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Despite the loss to the Shockers, Baylor managed to earn a split on the day as the Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead on Tulsa while Lisa Ferguson held the Golden Hurricane in check, tossing a complete game shutout.
Osburn put the Lady Bears out front quickly as she led off the game with a home run, taking a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for her first home run of the season and 24th of her career.
The run scored by Osburn pushed her career total to 124, tying Michelle Sorrels, 1996-99, for first on Baylor's career list.
After Ferguson held Tulsa to one hit over the first five innings, Baylor put the game away with four runs in the sixth. Lake delivered a two-out, two-run double as Ashley Monceaux and Reagan followed with run-scoring doubles as well to give the Lady Bears a commanding five-run lead.
Ferguson did the rest of the work, shutting down Tulsa in the final two innings to record her 12th shutout of her career after allowing only five hits while striking out four as she improved to 1-0 on the season.
Five Baylor players recorded two hits in the victory as Lake led the Baylor attack with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.
Katie Lee took the loss for Tulsa after allowing five runs on 11 hits in 7.0 innings of work as she fell to 0-1 on the season.
Despite the loss, Tulsa claimed the tournament championship with a 3-1 record.
Baylor's Osburn, Reagan and Schwethelm made the all-tournament team and were joined by Rachelle Coriddi (Illinois), Angelena Mexicano (Illinois), Shanna Diller (Illinois), Kelli McGlasson (Tulsa), Katie Torres (Tulsa), Maren Genoe (Tulsa) and Britnee Barnett (Wichita State).
The Lady Bears will return to action on Fri., Feb. 10, when Baylor travels to Houston, Texas, to open play in the Marriott Houston Hobby Invitational. Baylor will open play in the tournament when the Lady Bears face Houston at 3:00 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 10.
