WACO, Texas - The No. 10 Baylor softball team set season highs with 19 hits and 18 runs as the Lady Bears cruised to an 18-3 win over Oklahoma Christian in action at Getterman Stadium. With the win, Baylor improved to 21-3 on the season as the Eagles fell to 5-8.
Baylor jumped on the Eagles for four runs in the first as the Lady Bears capitalized on three Oklahoma Christian errors in the inning. Chelsi Lake and Katie Ottens each had RBI hits in the frame as the Lady Bears scored for the 16th time in the first inning this season.
Kelly Osburn then made history to lead off the second inning as she took a 1-2 pitch from Lindsey Lawson and drove it over the left field wall to give Baylor a 5-0 lead. The home run was the fifth of the season for Osburn and 21st of her career, surpassing Ryan Stukel, who hit 20 from 2000-03, for most career home runs.
Osburn's blast was just the beginning for the Lady Bears in the frame as Baylor would score nine runs on 10 hits in the inning to grab a 13-0 lead. Kim Wilmoth, April Luce and Tessa Lynam each tripled in the inning as Baylor set a new mark for most triples in a single game.
Stephanie Pomes also added a two-run home run to left field as Baylor put up nine runs in an inning for the second time this season.
After Oklahoma Christian scored two runs in the fourth, Baylor put the final touches on the win with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Pomes put the final touches on the victory with her blast over the center field wall, her second of the game and fifth of the season, to score Lake and give the Lady Bears an 18-2 lead.
Oklahoma Christian added a run in the fifth; however, it was not nearly enough as the game was called due to the run-rule.
Every Baylor starter managed hits in the game as Harmony Schwethelm, Pomes and Lake had three hits each to lead the Lady Bears to their highest hit total since Feb. 3, 2002, when Baylor collected 22 hits in a 18-1 win over Southern.
Schwethelm added four runs for Baylor while Pomes knocked in four RBI as Baylor improved to 5-2 all-time against Oklahoma Christian.
Nicole Jackson, starting her first career game, picked up the victory to move to 2-0 on the season after allowing only one hit in three scoreless innings of work.
Lawson took the loss for Oklahoma Christian, allowing 19 hits and 18 runs in four innings of work.
Baylor will return to action on Tuesday, March 8, when the Lady Bears host UT-Arlington for a single game beginning at 6:30 p.m.
