WACO, Texas -- The Baylor softball team claimed its third Getterman Classic title as the Lady Bears defeated Louisiana-Monroe and Centenary on Sunday to finish the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record. Baylor cruised to a 10-1 six-inning victory over Louisiana-Monroe before defeating Centenary 3-1 in the final game of the tournament.
Baylor clinched its third Getterman Classic title in the opener as the Lady Bears cruised to a win over Louisiana-Monroe. Carrie Leerberg led the attack for the Lady Bears as the senior shortstop went two-for-four with four RBI in the win.
Both of Leerberg's hits were triples, marking only the second time in school history a Baylor player has hit two triples in a game. Kelly Levesque was the only other player to accomplish the feat when she hit two triples against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 8, 2003.
Baylor exploded for six runs in the second inning to take control of the game. Stephanie Pomes provided the key hit in the inning as her double to left-centerfield scored Kelly Osburn and Katie Ottens to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead. Melissa Huffhines, Harmony Schwethelm and Leerberg also added RBI base hits in the inning as the Lady Bears grabbed the early six run lead.
Following a run by ULM in the bottom half and a run by Baylor in the third, Leerberg put the game away with her bases loaded clearing triple to right field in the top of the sixth. Schwethelm, Kylie Conroy and Kim Wilmoth all scored as Baylor took a 10-1 lead.
Freshman Nicole Jackson retired UL-Monroe in the bottom of the inning as Baylor claimed its second run-rule victory of the tournament.
Cristin Vitek picked up the win for the Lady Bears as she allowed only one run in four innings to move to 2-0 on the season. Jackson relieved Vitek in the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win.
In the second contest, Baylor claimed a 3-1 win as Chelsi Lake provided the fireworks with her two run blast over the left field wall to give the Lady Bears all the runs they would need.
Tessa Lynam picked up her second win of the season as she allowed only one unearned run in 5.2 innings of work while striking out five. The junior also added two hits for the Lady Bears in the victory.
Jackson picked up her first career save as she retired the last two batters as Baylor improved to 22-1 all-time at the Getterman Classic.
Lisa Ferguson, Osburn, Schwethelm, Vitek and Wilmoth were named to all-tournament team for the Lady Bears as Lindsey Virdell of Centenary, Molly Lawhead, LeAnn Butcher and Julie Balicki of Illinois and Lindsey Taylor of Louisiana-Monroe joined the five Baylor selections on the Getterman Classic All-Tournament team.
Baylor will look to remain undefeated on the season when the Lady Bears return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 6, when the Lady Bears host McNeese State in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
