Waco, Texas - Cristin Vitek's third no-hitter of the season guided No. 21 Baylor to a 2-0 victory over Kansas in game one as the Lady Bears swept a doubleheader from the Jayhawks in action at Getterman Stadium. Chelsi Lake provided the heroics in game two with her two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie as the Lady Bears captured a 2-0 victory.
With the victories, Baylor has now won 24 of the last 25 contests and improved to 31-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Kansas dropped to 20-15 on the season and 0-2 in conference action. In addition, Baylor pushed its winning streak to 10 games heading into a conference showdown with No. 9 Oklahoma.
Vitek (19-3) was in control throughout en route to her third complete-game no-hitter of the season. The left-hander struck out nine Jayhawks while only walking one Kansas batter. With two outs in the seventh, the Jayhawks' Jessica Moppin hit a shot to deep left field, however, Kelly Osburn managed to haul it in to secure the no-hitter and the Baylor victory.
Vitek got all the support she needed in the contest when the Lady Bears managed single runs in the first and second innings.
In the first, Kelly Levesque singled with two outs to score Harmony Schwethelm and give the Lady Bears an early 1-0 lead.
Schwethelm was involved in the second run of the game as well, as her single to left field scored Danelle Arnold to give Baylor a two-run lead.
Baylor captured another 2-0 victory in game two, as Chelsi Lake broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth with her two-out, two-run single.
On a 2-0 pitch from Kansas starter Kara Pierce, Lake hit a rocket into left field to score Arnold from third. Leerberg also came around to score when Heather Stanley was unable to field the ball cleanly as Baylor took a 2-0 lead into the final inning.
Lisa Ferguson (12-1) worked out of a jam in the seventh to finish the complete-game victory, allowing only four hits in seven innings of work.
Schwethelm led the way for the Lady Bears at the plate, going a perfect four for four on the day with a run and a RBI.
Baylor will return to action on Monday, March 29, when the Lady Bears host No. 9 Oklahoma in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
