San Marcos, Texas - The Baylor Lady Bears softball team returned to its winning ways with a 7-0 victory over Texas State in action at Bobcat Field. With the win, Baylor now has won 15 of the last 16 games to improve to 22-6 on the season.
The Lady Bears grabbed control early, jumping out to a big lead with three runs in the first inning. After loading the bases with one out, Melissa Maler reached on a fielder's choice to score Harmony Schwethelm, who reached earlier in the inning on a walk, to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
A pair of two out hits helped Baylor build a three run lead. Carrie Leerberg had the first clutch hit in the inning, hitting a rope to right field to score Kelly Osburn from third for a 2-0 Baylor lead.
Kim Wilmoth came up to the plate next, ending the scoring in the inning with her double just inside first base and down the left field line to dive in Maler and give Baylor the commanding 3-0 lead.
After ending a Bobcat threat in the bottom of the first inning, Baylor extended the lead to four with a single run in the top of the second. Baylor scored when Schwethelm hit a grounder deep into the hole at short that was fielded by Bobcat shortstop Leslie Sharp. In an effort to throw Schwethelm out at first, Sharp's throw sailed well over the first baseman's head as Kelly Levesque scored from second to give Baylor a 4-0 lead.
Baylor added a single run in the third and then two more in the fifth when Stephanie Pomes doubled to right-center field to score Amber Daniel and Wilmoth to give the Lady Bears a 7-0 cushion.
Lisa Ferguson recorded her fourth shutout of the season, allowing only five hits while striking out two to move her record to 9-1 on the season.
Schwethelm led the Baylor attack at the plate with three hits, while Wilmoth added two more hits for the Lady Bears.
