The Baylor Lady Bears dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked opponents in action today at the Palm Springs Classic. In the first game, Baylor fell to No. 12 Tennessee 2-0 before falling to top-ranked UCLA 9-0.
With the losses, Baylor falls to 7-5 on the season.
In the first game, Baylor held Tennessee scoreless through the first four innings before the Lady Vols broke through with two runs in the fifth inning. A Katherine Card single brought home Ashley Cline to give Tennessee a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Vols made it 2-0 when Lindsay Schutzler scored when Kristi Durant reached on a fielder's choice.
Baylor had a couple of chances to put runs on the scoreboard throughout the game, with the Lady Bears best chance coming in the fifth inning.
After Carrie Leerberg and April Luce managed back-to-back singles, Baylor had runners on first and second with one out. A sacrifice bunt by Danelle Arnold advanced the runners to second and third; however, Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott retired Baylor's Harmony Schwethelm to end the threat.
Abbott then retired the next six outs to give her the complete game victory and move her record to 11-0 on the year. For the game, Abbott allowed only three hits while striking out 11.
Cristin Vitek took the loss for Baylor, dropping her record to 4-2 on the year. Vitek allowed four hits and one run over four-plus innings of work.
In the second game, top-ranked UCLA managed to take control early and went on to defeat the Lady Bears 9-0 in five innings.
After taking a 1-0 lead, the Bruins Lisa Dodd blew the game open with a grand slam to give UCLA a 5-0 lead.
The Bruins would add two runs in the second and two in the fourth before closing out the Bears.
Dodd (5-0) also picked up the victory, pitching a complete-game while allowing only one hit and striking out four.
Tessa Lynam took the loss for the Bears.
Baylor will return to action at the Palm Springs Classic on Saturday, February 21, when the Lady Bears face No. 20 Cal-State Fullerton at 12:00 p.m. (CST) and Bethune-Cookman at 2:30 p.m. (CST).
