WACO, Texas - Costly errors by Baylor and steady defense by Stephen F. Austin propelled the LadyJacks to a sweep of the Bears, 3-1 and 4-0, at Baylor's Getterman Stadium on Wednesday. The Bears committed seven errors in the doubleheader while SFA was flawless on defense.
The LadyJacks capitalized on four Baylor errors to score three unearned runs to take the first game of the doubleheader.
It was a pitcher's duel between BU's Joni Miller and SFA's Devin Cobb until the fourth inning. In the top of the inning first baseman Angela Froboese singled up the middle and advanced to second on Melissa Bradford's fielders choice and an error by shortstop Stacey Hundley. Froboese and Bradford each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Henrion. Miller then issued a walk to Ashley Moffet to load the bases. Sascha Taylor singled home Froboese which proved to be their only run of the inning.
Baylor countered in the bottom of the inning on a double to right field by third baseman Kristen Lancaster and a single to right field by catcher Ryan Stukel.
SFA scored the game-winner in the sixth when Moffet singled to shortstop then scored on Taylor's sacrifice bunt and a throwing error. SFA added an insurance run in the seventh.
Cobb allowed six hits and struck out four to move her record to 5-2. Miller, a freshman, struck out five and allowed six hits but the Baylor squad committed four errors. Her record now stands at 5-5.
SFA struck first in game two scoring a run in the top of the first. Baylor's Carrie Arn walked the leadoff batter Jamie Brown, Froboese reached on a fielder's choice and Brown was safe at second on a throwing error by Vanessa VandeBurgt. Shortstop Melissa Bradford laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners up a base then Moffet hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Brown.
SFA added three more runs in the fifth to preserve the sweep. Freshman Sarah Caudle came in in relief of Arn in the top of the sixth and hurled two innings, striking out four.
Freshman Morgan Tolleson limited Baylor to just five hits in her complete game performance. Baylor catcher Ryan Stukel was 2-for-3 in the game to lead the Bears.
Arn's record now stands at 3-3 while Tolleson moves to 5-2. SFA is now 11-6 overall while the Bears fall to 10-11.
Baylor now travels to California for an extended road trip. They will play in Cal State Fullerton Tournament where their first opponent will be No. 8 California. Then it will be on to Fresno to play perennial nation power Fresno State and Central Michigan and finally to San Jose to participate in the NIST Tournament.
The Bears return home to host Oklahoma City University in a doubleheader on March 14 at 3:00 p.m.
