No. 8 Cal Defeats Bears, 9-1

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Baylor softball team (10-13) dropped its first two games at the Cal State Fullerton/Easton Showcase Friday afternoon, 9-1, against eighth-ranked Cal-Berkeley and 3-1 against San Diego State.
Cal (21-1) went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning when freshman first baseman Veronica Nelson unloaded a two-run home run to straight away center that cleared a 30-foot high dirt pile beyond the centerfield fence.
The Golden Bears added one more in the third when Pauline Duenas led off with a walk and went to second on a bloop single that fell in over second base. After a fly out and an illegal pitch, Duenas came home on an RBI groundout by Lisa Iancin.
Cal upped their lead to 4-0 in the fourth before Baylor put up a run in the fifth on Sarah Caudle's RBI double to left center brining home Sarah Sharp from first base, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Cal put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with five runs invoking the eight-run rule. The first three batters all reached base scoring one run before Candance Harper popped out to second base. Eryn Manahan then singled home pinch runner Mikella Pedretti, Courtney Scott singled home Iancin and Manahan, and Duenas singled home Scott to end the game.
Kristie Benton (0-1) took the loss for Baylor going 3.1 innings giving up four hits and four runs, all earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Joni Miller pitched one inning allowing five runs on six hits with a walk.
Nicole DiSalvio (6-0) got the win for the Golden Bears going the distance giving up one run on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Caudle finished the game 3-for-3 with the RBI double and leadoff Naomi Fitzgerald went 2-for-3.
