Bridget Boczar opens season with Tied-for-second place finish
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Baylor senior Bridget Boczar led Baylor women's golf with an impressive performance, bolstering the Bears to a third-place finish at the Cougar Classic.
The fifth-year thrust herself into contention with a second-round 66, on the strength of seven birdies. A final round 73 saw her settle into a tie for second, her best finish since a tie for second at The "Mo" last April.
Junior Malena Castro followed with a strong showing of her own, finishing tied for 15th. Castro carded two rounds in red figures, opening the tournament with a 1-under 70 before closing with a 2-under 69 in the final round.
Florida went wire-to-wire to claim the team title at 16-under, finishing 10 shots ahead of Tennessee. Baylor finished just one shot behind the Volunteers at 5-under to take third place.
Entering the week ranked No. 26 in the preseason poll, the Bears finished ahead of several teams ranked above them, including Miami, Ole Miss, UCF and Vanderbilt.
"We beat six teams that were ranked ahead of us in the preseason polls, which shows the kind of potential this group has," head coach Jay Goble said.
Senior Yurang Li highlighted her week with a 2-under 69 in the second round en route to a tie for 30th, while senior Charlotte Brook also posted an even-par round during the tournament to notch a tie for 64th.
"It was great to see everyone play at least one round at par or better," Goble said. "I loved seeing us get off to a solid start to the year this week. This is an extremely talented group, and I'm excited for our next couple of events."
The Cougar Classic marked the first of four events on Baylor's fall schedule. The Bears will have a week away from competition before returning to action at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma.
