Li and Ibarra help lead the Bears at Halbert National
GRANBURY, Texas — Baylor women's golf wrapped up its fall season Wednesday with an seventh-place finish at the inaugural Abilene Christian Intercollegiate at Halbert National. The three-day event, televised nationally on Golf Channel, featured nine teams, including eight Power Four programs. Â
The Bears were led throughout the week by senior Yurang Li, who finished as Baylor's low individual at 2-under-par, placing 10th overall. Li provided one of the tournament's most memorable moments during Tuesday's second round. Playing her final hole of the day on the course's par-4 ninth, Li holed out from the fairway with a 9-iron for eagle. The remarkable shot secured a 3-under 69 for the round and brought her back to even par for the tournament.  Â
Head coach Jay Goble called the moment "incredible," recalling how Li had predicted her hole-in-one at last year's NCAA Championships. Goble noted that Li had another feeling something special was coming before delivering the memorable finish on Tuesday. Â
Sophomore Paloma Ibarra also provided several memorable moments on Golf Channel. The Monterrey, Mexico, native battled through a difficult start to Monday's opening round before catching fire down the stretch, playing her final four holes in 4-under-par. Her impressive finish was capped by an eagle on the par-5 18th, where she drained a putt from off the green to close her round in dramatic fashion. Ibarra would make birdie the following two rounds to play the hole four under for three rounds helping her finish in Tied for 20th. Â Â
Fifth Year Senior Bridget Boczar also helped in the Bears contributing score posting back to back rounds of one-over-par, 73 enroute to a 32nd place finish. Malena Castro also helped in contributing rounds of 74 and 75 in the second and third round to finish in Tied for 33rd. While Freshman Sophia Ellestad posted 74 in the first round enroute to a Tied for 42nd finish. Â
As a team, Baylor posted rounds of 294, 287 and 294 to finish with a 54-hole total of 875, placing ahead of the Cincinnati Bearcats and host Abilene Christian. No. Six Oregon claimed the team title, finishing 14 shots ahead of runner-up Tennessee. Â
The event marks the conclusion of Baylor's four-tournament fall schedule, which took the Bears to South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The fall campaign was highlighted by a pair of runner-up finishes at the Charleston Intercollegiate and Tennessee Intercollegiate, along with several strong individual performances. Â
Looking ahead, Baylor will return to competition Jan. 30-Feb. 2 at the Therese Hession Challenge, hosted by Ohio State at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif. Â
