Bears collect six points in weekend slate in Waco

WACO, Texas – No. 11 Baylor soccer earned a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Field.

The win pushed the Bears to a 9-1-1 record this season and extended BU's unbeaten streak to eight games overall and five games in Big 12 play, dating back to last season.

Baylor struck first, breaking through in the 37^th minute when Noelle Sather buried a shot off an assist from Olivia Hess' corner kick to put the Bears up 1-0. Sather's goal marks her second consecutive game with a goal since returning from playing as a member of the Canadian team in the U-20 World Cup in Poland.

BU's defense held the Bearcats the rest of the half, with Azul Alvarez saving two to keep the Bears' 1-0 lead before the break.

In the 49^th minute, Lauren Omholt added insurance to Baylor's score, launching the ball from outside the box, courtesy of an assist rebounded off a defender from Hess. Omholt's goal is her fifth of the season and reclaims the team lead for the Bears. Hess' two assists on the day also moved her into the team lead with six on the year.

Cincinnati responded in the 73^rd minute with a goal from Joy Kimwemwe off assists from Ava Hendrick and Jane Dubois. The Bears' defense locked down the Bearcats the rest of the match, earning the 2-1 victory.

Alvarez recorded three saves on the afternoon, even with Cincinnati's Amber Brandon.

Baylor held a 21-12 edge in shots for the match, with 13 of those coming in the second half and five landing on goal.

Baylor continues its homestand, returning to Betty Lou Mays Field on Friday night to host Kansas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with fans encouraged to wear gold for the Bears' annual "Gold Rush" match. Gold Vamos Osos T-shirts will be available for free while supplies last. Admission to the match is free, and for those who cannot make it, the match will stream live on ESPN+.

"I thought we played well from start to finish. We had a let-down moment on that corner. We've got to get that resolved. At that point, we had made several changes, and I think we're trying to quickly get organized, and they caught us not prepared, which is not a good thing but a fixable thing for us, and we can definitely fix that moving into our next few games. I thought there was a period of time when we scored the second goal; right afterwards we could have had a third. Like we were really, really dominating in that moment, and had we scored that third goal, I think game over. So the difference, you know, 3-0, 2-1, they're both wins, but that's the game. It's very competitive. Teams are going to fight. They're going to try to get back in it. We've got to learn to manage those moments a little bit better. But happy with the result — that's a tough team. They don't concede a lot of goals, so two goals on them, and we had some really other quality chances. So, six points on the weekend for us here at home. We're really happy about that."
