UCF pulls away early and holds Bears scoreless in 8-0 shutout
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped its series opener to UCF, 8-0, on Friday night at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
The Bears (25-24, 11-14 Big 12) threatened early and generated traffic on the bases throughout the night, but were unable to capitalize offensively as the Knights (28-17, 16-9 Big 12) used a three-run second inning and four-run fourth to pull away.
BU's bullpen did well to limit UCF to just one run over the final five innings, including working out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Redshirt freshman designated hitter Brytton Clements had two of the Bears' five hits, while redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders extended his hitting streak and redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong reached in three of his four trips.
THE RUNDOWN
After a scoreless first, UCF grabbed the game's first lead in the top of the second with a three-run homer. Then, the Knights added to their lead in the fourth, scoring four runs on a pair of two-out RBI singles to stretch the advantage to 7-0. Baylor starter Lucas Davenport saw his 3-2 pitch ruled ball four to UCF's nine-hole hitter, which extended the inning and allowed UCF's two seeing-eye singles to swell the lead.
UCF tacked on one more in the fifth on a sac fly to make it 8-0, but junior right-hander Charlie Atkinson did well from there to toss three innings, a season high, and keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Atkinson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, inducing a foul pop out, recording his lone strikeout of the outing, then getting an inning-ending ground ball to send it to the eighth.
Despite some traffic from the Bears in the seventh that included a stolen base from sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock and Armstrong's second hit-by-pitch of the night, BU was unable to cash in and left one on as part of its eight runners left on base on the evening.
Both sides went quietly in the final two frames as UCF secured the series-opening victory.

On positive takeaways from tonight's game…
"I think that there's some positive things that happened today. Defensively, we made several really nice plays. I thought [Brady] Janusek was fantastic again, had a nice play out in right field. Travis Sanders had a heck of a pick and a 6-4 feed. Bo Caraway ran down some balls in center field for nice plays. I also liked that we had five innings of bullpen work and they gave up one run. We had to pitch out of some jams, but we made pitches."
On Brady Janusek's home run robbery…
"We don't see it that often in practice. Those are crazy plays. We saw Travis [Sanders] make a really unbelievable play, too, on a 6-4 backhand feed. Those are as good as it gets."
