Armstrong collects Player and Newcomer of the Week honors, Davenport picks up Pitcher nod
IRVING, Texas – Baylor baseball redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong and redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Lucas Davenport have been named Big 12 weekly award winners, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Armstrong was named the league's Player of the Week and Co-Newcomer of the Week, while Davenport picked up Co-Pitcher of the Week honors. The duo helped Baylor become the first school to sweep the Big 12's weekly awards, including co-winners, since West Virginia did so on May 2, 2023.
A slugging first baseman from Magnolia, Texas, Armstrong had a historic week at the plate for the Bears, tying the program's single-season home run record as part of a five-homer week. He batted a whopping .563 (9-for-16) with all nine of his hits going for extra bases (four doubles, five home runs). He also drove in nine runs and scored five of his own, logging his 13th, 14th and 15th multi-hit games and 11th, 12th and 13th multi-RBI games of the season this week in leading BU to a 3-1 record against UT Arlington and Texas Tech.
Dating back to last Sunday at Arizona State, Armstrong has hit seven blasts in his last five games and has now homered in five-consecutive games, becoming the first player in Baylor's recorded history to do so. His 21 home runs on the year are now tied for the most in program history, with still seven regular-season games to go, matching Charley Carter's previous record which had stood for 28 years with 21 long balls in the 1998 campaign.
Armstrong ranks fourth in the Big 12 and seventh nationally with 21 home runs, as one of just 12 players in the country with over 20 homers this year. He also ranks sixth in the conference and 27th nationally with 57 RBIs. This is Armstrong's third Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award of the 2026 season, a program record. He is the first player in conference history to win the league's weekly newcomer honor since Oklahoma State's Nolan Schubart won it thrice in 2023.
On the mound, Davenport became the first Bear to throw a complete game in four seasons when he did so in Saturday's series-opening game one of a doubleheader against Texas Tech, helping BU to an 8-1 victory. Davenport fanned 11, one shy of his career high, and did not allow a walk in the outing. His CG was one of three outstanding nine-inning complete game performances by a Big 12 pitcher this week, but his four hits allowed were the fewest of the three and came against the league's top-hitting offense.
This season, the Bears are 8-2 in games when Davenport starts. He has gone at least 5.1 innings in each of his last six starts and has racked up five or more strikeouts in each of his last eight starts. For the year, Davenport is 5-2 with a 3.96 ERA, which ranks eighth amongst qualified starters in the Big 12. His 5.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio is the third-best in the league. This is Davenport's first-career Big 12 honor.
The three weekly awards mark the eighth, ninth and 10th for the Bears under fourth-year head coach Mitch Thompson and are the program's 47th Big 12 Player of the Week, 46th Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, and 21st Big 12 Newcomer of the Week awards.
Davenport shares this week's pitching honors with Kansas' Dominic Voegele, while Armstrong split the newcomer praise with West Virginia's Chansen Cole. Voegele and Cole joined Davenport as the trio of complete-game pitching performers, while Armstrong stood alone as the league's player of the week.
