Bears look to continue postseason run in Elite Eight
ATHENS, Ga. – Nationally ranked No. 11 Baylor men's tennis looks to keep its postseason streak hot as it takes on No. 1 Texas in the NCAA Quarterfinals, held in Athens, Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Thursday at 9 a.m. CT.
Kicking off the Elite Eight with the first match of the day, No. 10 seed Baylor (25-9, 6-2 Big 12) will face an in-state foe of No. 2 seed Texas (27-6, 12-2 SEC) for the second time this season. The last time the Bears and Longhorns met was on Feb. 16 in the ITA National Indoor Semifinals in Dallas, where UT snapped BU's hot streak, 4-0, after the Bears took down three consecutive top-10 teams in a one-week span.
The Bears are coming off a memorable match where Baylor hosted the NCAA Super Regionals against Pepperdine, defeating the Waves in a thrilling 4-3 night match in front of 1,300 fans at the Hurd Tennis Center. Prior to facing the Waves, Baylor defeated Tulsa, 4-0, and No. 22 Auburn, 4-1, in the first and second rounds in Waco.
The Pepperdine match came down to none other than co-Big 12 Player of the Year, Devin Badenhorst, who came back from a first set deficit amidst cramping and intense conditions, winning court one, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(5), to advance his team to its first NCAA Quarterfinals appearance since 2022 and 16th time in program history.
Badenhorst, ranked at No. 10 in ITA's most recent rankings, will likely face off against UT's Sebastian Gornzy, ranked No. 3, on court one on Thursday morning. The Texas Longhorns have had a successful season, winning the SEC regular season and conference tournament and reaching the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth straight year. Their road to Athens included wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-0, SMU, 4-0, and No. 17 San Diego, 4-1, all held in Austin.
Historically, this will be the 119th meetup between Baylor and Texas. The Longhorns have taken the last three matches, however prior to, the Bears had won four straight and seven of the last eight. The last time BU played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens was in 2017, against Texas in the Round of 16, where UT advanced 4-1.
Baylor is the only team outside of the top eight seeds to make it to the NCAA Quarterfinals and is looking to move on to the NCAA Semifinals for the first time since 2021 and the seventh time in program history. The winner of the BU versus UT match will play the winner of Ohio State versus TCU on Saturday, May 15, in the Final Four.
