Boczar ties for 2nd individually, best-ever finish at Baylor
THE "MO" FINAL RESULTS
BRYAN, Texas – Overcoming a slow start that saw them go 7-over through the first four holes of Wednesday's final round, the 24th-ranked Baylor women "hung in there" the rest of the way to shoot 8-over 296 and finish second behind third-ranked Texas A&M at The "Mo" Morial at Traditions Club.
Bridget Boczar, a second-year transfer from Oakland, closed with an even-par 72 and moved up to tie for second at 3-over 219 for her best-ever finish at Baylor and was joined in the top 10 by Division II transfer Charlotte Brook (7th, 5-over, 221) and sophomore Malena Castro (T-8th, 6-over 222).
"Couldn't be more proud of Bridget for having her best finish at Baylor, finishing tied for second," Baylor head coach Jay Goble said. "Same thing for Charlotte, who has not really been in the lineup all year. She really showed us a lot this week and showed us that she's a gamer. And, of course, Malena finds a way to sneak into the top 10 as well."
Baylor finished at 24-over 888 and placed in the top five for the 10th time in 11 tournaments this season. The Aggies came from one stroke back to win with a 54-hole total of 21-over 885, with Missouri (34-over, 898), Kansas (40-over, 904) and Tulsa (43-over, 907) rounding out the top five in the 16-team tournament.
"The team played super hard the last two days," Goble said. "We didn't have a great start to the tournament and, obviously, it was tough conditions and tough wind. But yesterday, to have the best round of the day by five shots. And today, I would say that we got off to kind of a bad start, and then we just hung in there the rest of the day. I'm proud of them. This is a tough place, and I think this will prepare us for hard tournaments to come after this."
After bogeying three of her first seven holes, Boczar played the last 11 holes in 1-under to finish off her even-par 72. Brook, who tied her season best with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday, came back with a 4-over 77 that took her out of contention for medalist honors.
Castro, who has seven top-10 finishes this year, finished with a flurry. She eagled with a chip-in from 20 feet in front of the green on the par-5 15th and then birdied the difficult par-4 No. 1 that yielded only six other birdies all week. Baylor's other five players were 6-over on that hole in the final round.
Illinois transfer Yurang Li was the Bears' other scoring golfer, shooting 4-over 76 for the round and tying for 34th at 15-over 231. Silje Ohma, who had recorded four-consecutive top-15 finishes, shot 7-over 79 and tied for 39th at 17-over 233.
After finishing the regular season, Baylor will prepare for the upcoming Big 12 Championships, which will be held April 23-25 at the Dallas Athletic Club., "which is a good place for us," Goble said.
"It feels a lot like Ridgewood, and Ridgewood's old greenskeeper is the guy taking care of the golf course. So, I like it for us. And I think the Big 12 Championships are wide open, because there's a bunch of us in that 15 to 25 range that could all do it."
The Big 12 features five top-25 teams – No. 15 UCF, 19th-ranked Arizona State, No. 21 Oklahoma State, No. 23 Iowa State and Baylor at No. 24.
