Bears lead field with 17 birdies, sit two shots out of third place

BIG 12 ROUND ONE RESULTS

DALLAS – Outside of the par-3 second hole, the Baylor women's golf team shot even par on the par-72 track at Dallas Athletic Club in Thursday's opening round of the Big 12 Championship.

But the Bears' four scoring golfers carded a triple bogey and two double bogeys on the 153-yard hole, leaving them in sixth place in the 14-team tournament at 7-over 295, 10 shots out of first place. The No. 2 hole played as the third-toughest on the day with an average score of 3.44.

"We played a lot of really good golf today," Baylor head coach Jay Goble said. "It's unfortunate to have had a bad hole on No. 2 that our scores, but I feel like we're still in this championship. We had more birdies than any team in the field. If we can clean up some of the mistakes and play our games tomorrow, I truly believe we can move up that leaderboard."

Starting its round at No. 10, Baylor was at the top of the leaderboard through the first 10 holes at 6-under. But that lead disappeared on the second hole, when the Bears lost seven strokes and fell to 1-over.

Offsetting three bogeys on a difficult stretch of four holes, sophomore Malena Castro birdied the par-4 ninth hole and is tied for ninth at even-par 72. Seniors Bridget Boczar and Silje Ohma are tied for 23^rd at 2-over 74, with Illinois transfer Yurang Li a shot back at 3-over 75.

"Malena played very solid today," Goble said. "It did get a little tougher on our back nine with the wind, but it was nice for her to finish her round with a birdie on No. 9 today.

"The firepower is there; we just have to minimize our mistakes."

Houston has three players in the top 10, led by 18-hole leader Natalie Saint Germain at 3-under 69, and is two up on 15^th-ranked UCF at 3-under 285. Iowa State is tied for third at 5-over 293, followed by Iowa State at 6-over and Baylor at 7-over.
