Bears allow just five baserunners after the first inning, ride strong pitching to seventh win in last nine games
On the backs of a strong pitching performance, BU (19-13) collected its seventh win in its last nine ballgames and fifth midweek win of the year. The Bears allowed just five baserunners, two walks and three hits, after the first inning as six bullpen arms recorded scoreless appearances.
Redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders had the biggest hit of the night, a two-run single in the top of the fifth that gave BU the lead. Baylor also stole five bases and took advantage of a handful of UTA miscues to top the Mavericks (13-18).
THE RUNDOWN
UTA got on the board first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, but Baylor was quickly able to make up the deficit with solo tallies in each the second and third frames. Redshirt sophomore catcher Brayden Buchanan drove in his second run of the season with a sharp single in the top of the second, then fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson tied things in the third with an RBI infield knock.
BU wreaked havoc on the bases right from the start with three stolen bases through the first three frames. Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek stole his team-leading 12th bag of the year in the top of the first, sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock stayed perfect with his ninth steal in as many tries in the second, and freshman outfielder Bo Caraway swiped his third base of the season to start the third inning. In the fourth, the Bears didn't slow down on the bases as redshirt freshman designated hitter Hunter Snow walked and promptly took second for his second steal of the year.
Baylor opened it up in the top of the fifth as the first six Bears to the plate each reached safely in the inning. Sanders gave BU the lead with a two-run single after a hit batter, single and walk loaded the bases. After another infield single re-loaded the bases, Janusek walked to make it 5-2.
Meanwhile on the mound, four Baylor pitchers combined to face the minimum over the next 14 consecutive Mavericks from the second inning on, allowing just one walk and promptly erasing the baserunner trying to advance on a wild pitch. A two-out single in the bottom of the sixth snapped the streak, but the BU pitchers were able to avoid any further threat as just one UTA runner reached second base over the final three innings.
Sophomore infielder Cade Dodson swiped his eighth base in as many tries in the eighth inning, though Baylor was unable to add any insurance. It wouldn't matter, as BU relievers RJ Ruais and Caleb Bunch retired the UTA side without much stress to ensure the victory.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On his club's pitching and defense…
"That's a big deal, we didn't give them many free bases and they gave us quite a few. We took advantage of that, stole a bunch of bags, ended up getting just enough hits to make it work. But I thought after the first inning of the game, we really pitched the ball well. Every guy that went out there kept them off balance and didn't give up many hard-hit balls. Pitching and defense was definitely the key."
Redshirt Freshman RHP Brayden Bergman
On his performance and the pitching staff's efforts tonight…
"Our whole staff, we've got some dudes that every time we go out there we're confident in our abilities and what Sned has taught us to get in there, throw strikes, dominate our outing and put up a zero and hand it off to the next guy. For me, I went out there, threw strikes, trusted my pitches, trusted Sned's pitch calling and did my thing."
Redshirt Junior INF Travis Sanders
On his 35-game on-base streak…
"As a leadoff hitter, the goal is to get on base. And yeah, I've been told that stat, 35 games or whatever, it is what it is. If I get on base and we don't win, it's no good. But getting on base, coming up at the top of the lineup, being that tablesetter, it's cool to have done it 35 times."
