Bears will try to advance to NCAA Championship for sixth-straight year
WACO, Texas – Seven years in the making, Baylor women's golf will host the NCAA Waco Regional May 11-13 at Ridgewood Country Club and will be the fifth seed for the 12-team tournament.
The selections were announced Wednesday on the Golf Channel, with fourth-ranked Texas A&M pegged as the top seed, followed by eighth-ranked Oregon, No. 17 Tennessee, No. 21 SMU and the 26th-ranked Bears. Rounding out the field are LSU, TCU, Tulsa, Colorado, Northern Arizona, Tarleton State and Prairie View A&M.
"I think it's the strongest regional field," Baylor coach Jay Goble said. "As I look at probably the first seven or eight teams, they're all great teams. Oregon is our No. 2 seed, and they have the No. 1 player in the world, Kiara Romero. Tennessee just won the SEC championship. SMU finished second at the ACC championship.
"I would say we have a really strong group of teams coming out to Waco, but I feel really strong about my team, and I feel great about the fact that we do have a home-course advantage."
Baylor put in the bid to host a regional back in 2019 and was picked as one of the six regional sites for this year's tournament. Waco is joined by Ann Arbor, Mich., Louisville, Ky., Tallahassee, Fla., Chapel Hill, N.C. and Stanford, Calif.
The top five teams from each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships May 22-27 at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Baylor is appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in the last 14 possible seasons and is trying to make it to the NCAA Championship for the sixth-consecutive year.
"My guess is that people would hate to see that we're the 5 seed," Goble said. "I believe a 5 seed at home is a higher seed. That's what our expectation is. We're not going to take for granted that we're playing regionals at home. We're out here preparing already, and we're going to continue to monitor the conditions of the golf course and what it plays like and what it feels like and keep doing that every day for the next couple weeks."
The Bears won the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in the fall and have finished in the top five in 10 of their 12 tournaments this year.
All 12 teams in the tournament will have a practice round at Ridgewood on Sunday, May 10, with 18-hole rounds scheduled for Monday-Wednesday, May 11-13.
