BU returning to Prairie Dunes for the 15th time, site of 2001 title
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – On the 25th anniversary of the program's lone Big 12 Championship title, the Baylor men's golf team will return to the Perry Maxwell-designed Prairie Dunes Golf Club that served as the host site back in 2001.
This is the 15th time in 30 years that the tournament has been hosted on the challenging, unforgiving par-70 layout. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18-hole days on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"I'm not going to claim that I'm an expert on that place," said interim head coach Ryuan Murphy, an assistant on the Texas men's team when the Longhorns won it in 2017. "Coach (Mike) McGraw probably knows the most about it, but he'd be the first to tell you that you can play that golf course a thousand different ways. I don't think it's as hard as Southern Hills, but it's a golf course you have to respect fully if you want to break par on it."
The Bears will be paired with Iowa State, Kansas State and UCF for Monday morning's 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, with the afternoon round scheduled to start around 1:30 p.m.
"For us, it's just another opportunity to put your best foot forward and see what we can do," Murphy said. "(Our mindset) is identical to every tournament we go to. We have a process, we start at zero, and we go through our preparations. It all revolves around the golf course. And in this case, it's an American classic.
"We do have some experience on a Perry Maxwell golf course with Southern Hills. You'll see some similarities there, particularly in the green complexes, which are phenomenal. Perry Maxwell is known for that. So, I'm excited about it."
Murphy is going with the same five-player lineup for the fifth-consecutive tournament, led by senior Jonas Appel and UConn transfer Alex Heard. Auburn transfer Evan Vo is playing out of the No. 3 position, junior Davis Ovard is at No. 4 and senior Sam Dossey at No. 5, with sophomore Vincent Stjernfeldt available to sub in for any of the four rounds this week.
At No. 93 in the latest SCOREBOARD rankings, the Bears will likely have to win the tournament and the automatic bid that comes with it to make it to postseason play.
"If you've got added expectations or added pressures, like we have to win, that will backfire on you in our game," Murphy said. "And these guys know that. But on the flip side, we know things can change as well. Our game is related to confidence, and these are good players. If they feel good on the golf course, and they have some confidence going into it, that can take them a long way."
Live scoring is available at Big 12 Championship. Wednesday's final round will be streamed live on ESPN+, with John Liddle and Hope Barnett calling the action.
