BU tops a pair of top-50 teams at Myrtle Beach tournament
MICHAEL MARINO RESULTS
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Putting together the fifth-best round of the day, Baylor men's golf beat a pair of top-50 teams and finished eighth in the inaugural Michael A. Marino Classic on Tuesday at the Dunes Beach and Golf Club.
Jonas Appel and Davis Ovard shot even-par 72 on Tuesday, giving Baylor eight rounds of par or better in the 54-hole, three-day tournament, as the Bears had a closing round of 5-over 293 and a 54-hole total of 5-over 869.
"We had a couple nice rounds in Round 2 from Jonas and Sam (Dossey), and we had some solid even-par rounds this week on a terrific golf course," interim head coach Ryan Murphy said. "Unfortunately, we counted a 75 or higher each round, and that hurts your chances to compete. We need more scores in the 60s, and our throw-out score needs to be around par."
North Carolina State recorded its third-straight sub-par round and won the team title with a 15-under-par 849 total. Louisville was second at 11-under 852, followed by Charleston and the host Coastal Carolina team at 3-under 861.
No. 50 Florida Gulf Coast was 11th (11-over, 875), with No. 37 UNLV finishing 15th at 25-over 889 in a field that included six Power Five teams.
Narrowly missing top-25 individual finishes, Appel and Dossey tied for 26th at 1-over 217. Appel had four birdies and an eagle and Dossey carded five birdies in matching scores of 3-under 69 in a second round that was completed Monday morning.
David Ovard recorded back-to-back scores of even-par72 after capping an opening round of 8-over 80 with a nine on the par-4 18th hole. Transfers Evan Vo and Alex Heard weren't able to build on their opening-round scores of 1-under 71 and finished 40th and 48th, respectively, in the field of 90 players.
As a team, Baylor finished with the most pars (149) and had the second-best par-3 scoring average at 3.04 (+2).
In a quick turnaround, the Bears will compete in the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational that starts next Monday at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
