Heard, Appel, Ovard in top 20 going into final round
DAY 1 RESULTS
CARROLLTON, Texas – Shooting four shots better than the scoring average in Monday morning's opening round, Baylor is fourth through the first 36 holes in the Maridoe Collegiate and goes into Tuesday's final round ahead of a pair of top-20 teams.
The Bears followed up a 1-over 289 with a 21-over 309 in the afternoon round as winds picked up and the average scores went up by more than a stroke.
Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State shot even-par 576 and has a 14-shot lead on ninth-ranked Arizona State (590), followed by the host North Texas team (594), Baylor (598), 15th-ranked Oklahoma (600) and No. 16 Alabama (601).
OSU boasts three of the four players who shot in red numbers for the day, led by Ethan Fang at 4-under 140. UConn transfer Alex Heard leads a trio of Baylor players in the top 20, shooting 1-under 71 in the morning round and is tied for seventh at 1-over 145, just five shots off the lead.
Senior Jonas Appel matched Heard with six birdies on the day and is tied for 17th at 5-over 149, followed by junior Davis Ovard at 6-over 150. Ovard shot 2-under 70 in the first round and was tied for fourth before an 8-over round of 80 in the afternoon.
Rounding out the scores in the starting lineup, Evan Vo and Sam Dossey are tied for 40th and 47th, respectively, at 11- and 12-over. Playing as an individual, freshman Tyler Sanford tied Appel for the Bears' second-best score in the afternoon at 4-over 76 and moved up to a tie for 38th at 10-over 154.
Tuesday's third and final round will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start, with the Bears paired with Alabama and Oklahoma and teeing off on holes 4 through 7.
