Top-ranked Stanford heads field for elite tournament in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. – When former Baylor golfer Giovana Maymon called to ask if the Bears would join her Arizona team for the first Arizona Thunderbird Intercollegiate, Jay Goble said yes "the second she asked me."
A part of Baylor's 2015 NCAA national championship runner-up team, Maymon led the Wildcats to last year's Big 12 Championship in her first year as the head coach after three years as an assistant at Texas A&M.
"She's someone I really admire and just want to support her and her team by coming out and playing in the event," Goble said of the Thunderbird Intercollegiate, which begins Monday at Tucson Country Club.
"It's going to be big-time golf this week. We're paired with (No. 22) Arizona and Stanford, who's No. 1 in the country, in the first round. So, we're going to get a really good look of where we stand and where we stack up against the best teams in the country. We're going to get a front-row seat to that this weekend."
The elite field includes five top-25 teams, with Arizona, Stanford and No. 21 Baylor joined by 18th-ranked Arizona State and No. 20 Oklahoma State. Texas Tech and Colorado are also in the top 50 in the latest Scoreboard rankings, with UNC-Charlotte, Marshall, UALR, Wisconsin, Seattle, Cal Poly, Grand Canyon and BYU rounding out the field.
After getting "a little bit of the rust off" with a fourth-place finish at the UCF Challenge, Goble will switch up his lineup this week. Freshman Amelia Wan is in the No. 1 spot, followed by senior Bridget Boczar, sophomore Malena Castro, senior Silje Ohma and first-semester freshman Paloma Ibarra Ambia.
At last week's UCF Challenge, Castro tied for fourth at 7-under-par 209, with Wan opening with a 6-under 66 and tying for 10th at 5-under 211. Boczar, playing as an individual, shot 4-under 58 in the second round and tied for 14th at 3-under 213.
Junior transfer Yurang Li, who ended the fall with back-to-back first-place finishes, is "feeling under the weather," Goble said, and will sit out this week. She finished tied for 35th last week at 3-over 219.
"I think it's best for her to get rest and get ready for Houston," Goble said of the Feb. 23-24 Chevron Challenge in Houston. "It kind of hurts not to have in their lineup. But again, we need her later on in the year. We don't, per se, need her right this second."
The first of two rounds on Monday will begin with a 9:30 a.m. CT shotgun start, with Baylor paired with Stanford, Arizona and Wisconsin. Live scoring for the tournament is available at Thunderbird Intercollegiate.
