Senior LHP Calder goes five scoreless in no decision as Boilermakers walk off Bears
Senior left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder was sharp for the Bears, turning in five scoreless innings on the mound and becoming just the sixth starting pitcher in tournament history to go at least five without allowing a run.
Baylor (4-2) got out to a 5-0 lead before Calder exited, but unfortunately was unable to hang on as Purdue (3-3) racked up 10 hits on BU's bullpen and came-from-behind to steal the Saturday contest.
THE RUNDOWN
For the fourth time in six games, the Bears wasted no time getting on the board and struck for the game's first tally in the opening frame. Sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock walked, stole second and came around on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Brady Janusek that gave BU the early lead.
Calder was sharp from the start, allowing just one hit and one walk his first time through the lineup. He kept the Bears in front and racked up four punchouts through his first three innings on the mound.
In the top of the fourth, redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements delivered with his first-career RBI knock, a run-scoring double that swelled the Baylor lead to 2-0. Calder followed suit with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the frame, before the Bears opened it up with a three-spot in the top of the fifth.
BU sent seven men to the plate and wreaked havoc on the bases, swiping a pair of bases in the inning as part of the three-run frame. Redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, then Riebock crossed the plate on fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson's safety squeeze bunt. Buchanan put the exclamation point on the inning with an RBI double, bringing home Janusek to make it a 5-0 advantage.
Calder ran into a little bit of danger in the bottom of the fifth, but buckled down to record a big strikeout and strand a pair of Boilermakers. He finished his day with five punchouts and did not allow a run on four hits and two walks.
After the Bears went scoreless in the top of the sixth, Purdue got on the board thanks to a three-run home run in the home half. But, junior right-hander Luke DeVasher, Baylor's third pitcher of the day, came on to induce a 6-4-3 double play, the Bears' third twin killing of the afternoon, to end the inning and avoid further damage.
Purdue was able to tie things up in the bottom of the seventh, as the Boilermakers made use of four hits in the inning and scored two runs to even the scoreline at 5-5.
Baylor had a chance in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs for Riebock, but his screaming line drive found the glove of a diving Boilermaker first baseman and the game remained deadlocked at 5-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Purdue's leadoff man reached and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a pitching change, Purdue's leading hitter sent the first pitch he saw back up the middle for the walk-off RBI single, chasing in the game's winning run and stealing the comeback victory from BU.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today's game…
"Tough one. You've got to give Purdue credit, they fought back and got back in that game. We took a nice 5-0 lead and Ethan [Calder] threw the ball extremely well in his start. It's a disappointing way to lose one, but Purdue got the hits to get it done. We weren't walking a ton of people, we weren't hitting people, we weren't making errors or giving extra outs, they earned it. It's a disappointing loss for us and a good win for them."
Senior Left-Handed Pitcher Ethan Calder
On his outing…
"I felt like I was commanding the heater pretty well. Felt like I was able to get it in and get some weak contact. I felt like I had the changeup going and the slider was there. I felt pretty good about all four of my pitches, and when that's going, it's a fun day."
