Marriott’s career night spoiled by Horned Frogs’ five-run ninth
WACO, Texas – Despite a brilliant performance by junior right-handed pitcher Mason Marriott, Baylor baseball dropped its series opener to TCU, 7-1, Friday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
Marriott outdueled TCU ace Payton Tolle, the Big 12's Preseason Newcomer of the Year, going a career-best eight innings on the mound while allowing just two earned runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. The Bears (20-24, 9-13) chased Tolle from the ballgame in the seventh after 117 pitches, but only tagged the Frogs' Friday starter for one run on three hits and four walks.
Baylor struck first in the bottom of the second, but a pair of unanswered TCU (27-16, 11-14) runs in the fourth and fifth kept it a 2-1 ballgame for most of the night. In the top of the ninth, four free passes plated an insurance run for the Horned Frogs and a grand slam broke it open, as the visitors claimed the series opener.
THE RUNDOWN
Junior infielder Tyriq Kemp laced an RBI single right back up in the middle to open the scoring in the bottom of the second and Baylor took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning after junior catcher Cortlan Castle nabbed a runner stealing to end the third.
TCU evened things up in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, but Marriott fanned a pair in back-to-back fashion to end the frame. The Horned Frogs took the lead in the fifth after a one-out triple scored on a sacrifice fly a batter later. BU threatened in the home half, but stranded a pair of baserunners after fifth-year senior infielder Cole Posey's line shot to the right-center gap was tracked down.
After Marriott retired the side in order to start the seventh, the Bears rallied again with a pair of one-out baserunners but were unable to cash in and remained trailing by a run. Again, Marriott went out and recorded another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, but Baylor was unable to muster anything offensively.
In the ninth, three walks and a hit by pitch accounted for TCU's third run and set up a grand slam, which made it 7-1 and squandered BU's hopes of a comeback.

On tonight's ballgame…
"We didn't do anything wrong except for the five spot in the last inning, that didn't really give us a chance to come back. I thought Mason Marriott was fantastic. I thought it was a true pitcher's duel and those two guys (Marriott and TCU starter Payton Tolle) were going head to head. Both guys were really good. It was a really good ballgame. I thought our guys played hard, played well, we just couldn't get enough hits against their guy, and when you look at his numbers you see why. Mason matched him pitch for pitch and was really good, I'm really proud of him."
Junior Right-Handed Pitcher Mason Marriott
On what was working for him tonight…
"Just attacking the hitters and being competitive every pitch. Not being scared of them. They're a really good ball club, so I just had to go in there and attack."
On bouncing back tomorrow…
"We still get to come out and compete against them. I have all the confidence in the world in our hitters. They're going to go out there and compete every at-bat, put today behind them, wash it, move on to the next pitch, the next at-bat, and the next game tomorrow."
