Bears unable to hold down Sooners offense in 19-7 loss
The Sooners scored nine unanswered runs after BU plated one in the sixth, riding a 16-hit output to a series-opening win. Four Bears collected multi-hit games in junior outfielder Ty Johnson, fifth-year senior infielder Cole Posey, junior infielder Tyriq Kemp and sophomore outfielder Caleb Bergman.
Baylor scored three runs in each of the first two frames, as the first five batters in the first and first four batters in the second reached safely. Johnson, Posey and junior catcher Cortlan Castle each drove in a pair of runs on the night.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor (21-27, 9-16) got things going right away as an OU error, a pair of hits, a walk and a run-scoring hit-by-pitch opened the scoring. Posey singled home a run before Castle was plunked with the bases juiced. A sacrifice fly by senior infielder Daniel Altman made it 3-0.
Back-to-back extra-base hits in the bottom of the first pulled the Sooners (30-17, 19-6) within one at 3-2, but the Bears put up another three-spot in their next offensive half inning to extend the lead. Johnson's RBI double was followed by another Posey RBI knock, making it 5-2. A sacrifice squeeze by Castle pushed one more across but that would be all.
OU climbed back with two in the third and two in the fourth to tie it, as left-handed pitcher Braden Davis found his stride on the bump, retiring nine-straight Bears before a pinch-hit infield single by senior catcher Harrison Caley in the fifth.
From there, the Sooners scored four in the bottom of the fifth to pull away, and went on to score nine unanswered after Johnson's second RBI double in the sixth.
