Bears strand winning run on first in 4-2 defeat
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (16-31) dropped a narrow 4-2 contest to Grand Canyon (31-19) Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, after stranding the winning run on first base to end the ballgame.
Though the Bears collected just one hit, they reached base 10 times on free passes, including five in the bottom of the ninth to nearly come from behind and steal the victory over the Antelopes.
Five BU pitchers combined to scatter four hits and allowed just one earned run in the loss.
THE RUNDOWN
After sophomore RHP Mason Marriott retired the GCU side in order in the first inning, the 'Lopes scored the game's first run with an RBI groundout in the top of the second.
Marriott and junior southpaw Cam Caley tag-teamed the next two frames and kept Grand Canyon off the scoreboard until a run-scoring fielder's choice, which followed a BU error, made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth.
GCU went on to score a run in each of the next two innings, both times after Baylor errors kept the inning alive, opening up a 4-0 lead through seven.
In the bottom of the ninth, junior OF Hunter Simmons was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, then four Bears worked walks to plate two runs. With the bases loaded and two away, GCU recorded a looking strikeout on a full count to escape with the win, stranding BU's winning run on first base.

On tonight's game…
"I thought our pitchers did a good enough job to win a ballgame for us. I think they had a positive performance. Anderson Needham in particular was fantastic. Gabe Craig had a good inning. [Mason] Marriott was pretty solid, [Cam] Caley was pretty solid, [Grant] Golomb did well, so overall the positive of the night is that our pitching staff showed up and competed pretty good."
