ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹When the Baylor men's golf team placed sixth at the Big 12 Championship, the outside perception might have been that "they've played their best golf and it's over."
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹Not true, not even close.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹Continuing a season-long trend that has seen them record one "first" after another and set one program record after another, the Bears did it again Wednesday at the NCAA Stanford Regional.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹After shooting a program-record 15-under-par 265 in Tuesday's second round, Baylor closed with a 1-over 281 on Wednesday and won a share of its first region championship, tying top-seeded Stanford at 17-under 823. That broke the previous 54-hole school record in an NCAA Tournament by 36 strokes.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹"To come in here and play a team like Stanford and tie them for 54 holes in their own back yard, that says a lot," said coach Mike McGraw, who led the Bears to their seventh NCAA Championships berth and first back-to-back appearances since 1966-67, before the start of regional qualifying.
"Some of them didn't finish the way they wanted or maybe missed a putt or something, so you kind of have that lingering effect of I didn't finish the way I wanted. I told them, `Guys, we came in and did what we were supposed to do. You advanced.'''
Baylor trailed Stanford by as many as five strokes late in the round, but freshman Cooper Dossey eagled the par-5 16th and had two good par saves on the last two holes while Stanford's Maverick McNealy had a three-putt double-bogey on the 18th.
"He had an amazing up-and-down on 17 from really just a dead position," McGraw said of Dossey, who shot 3-under 69 in the final round and finished second overall at 9-under 201. "You couldn't get it within 10 feet, and he ended up about five feet and made the putt. Then on 18, he hit his first putt from 40 feet maybe seven feet past and made it coming back. That was huge."
Dossey's 201 total broke Baylor's NCAA Tournament record by eight shots, and he also posted the Bears' best-ever regional finish, topping Cody Paladino's tie for second at the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional.
"He was coming off kind of a nagging injury that he's had since The Maxwell, and has come back nicely," McGraw said. "He's done all of his rehab, so he's been very faithful about that, and is kind of reaping the benefits of doing it the right way. He has no pain right now, so we hope that continues for at least one more week, for sure."
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹Senior Hunter Shattuck and junior Matthew Perrine shot 71 and 72, respectively, in the closing round and tied for seventh at 3-under 207. That's still two shots better than the previous Baylor NCAA Tournament record of 209 set by Ryan Baca at the 2006 NCAA West Regional and by Payne Gniewek at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹Shattuck also tied for second in the 75-player field with 16 birdies, including four on Wednesday.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹"He had 16 birdies for three rounds, which is pretty amazing," McGraw said. "And last week, in the U.S. Open qualifying, he must have had five or six birdies that day. So, he's making five or six birdies a round all of a sudden, and that kind of changes your whole outlook on life when you do that."
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹Braden Bailey, who tied the program's NCAA Tournament record with a 6-under-par 64 on Tuesday, tied for 27th at 4-over 214. Fellow sophomore Garrett May had his score count for the second time in three days with a steady round of even-par 70 and tied for 38th at 6-over 216.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹"They have a propensity to go low, and that's a good thing," McGraw said. "Now, we didn't go as low today. You don't do that every day of your life. But, they've shot a lot of really low numbers this year."
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹Pepperdine (5-under, 835), Oklahoma (3-under, 837) and North Carolina (3-over, 843) join Baylor and Stanford in advancing to the NCAA Championships that begin next Friday, May 26, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¹"There's just a lot of things they're doing that no other Baylor team has done," McGraw said. "I think they've raised some eyebrows around the country, and I think they feel they belong where they are, which is a good feeling."
THE RUNDOWN
STANFORD, Calif. -- Baylor men's golf made a late rally to win its first-ever NCAA Regional title, matching Stanford with a three-round total of 17-under-par 823 at the Stanford (Calif.) Regional. With the win, Baylor earned the seventh NCAA Championships berth in program history.
Baylor trailed by two strokes with only one player remaining on the 18th hole in Wednesday's final round. Freshman Cooper Dossey sank a six-foot par putt, while Stanford's Maverick McNealy three-putt for double bogey after hitting his approach into a bunker on the left side of the green. Dossey finished his round at 3-under-par 67, and his par on No. 18 pushed him in front of McNealy to take second place individually at 9-under-par 201.
BU trailed by as many as five strokes late in the round, but Dossey got the comeback started with an eagle on the par-5 16th hole. Dossey finished three strokes back of medalist Brad Dalke of Oklahoma, who shot 1-under 69 in the final round to finish at 12-under 198. Dossey's second-place finish was the best individual result in an NCAA Tournament in program history, beating Cody Paladino's tie for third place at the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional.
Senior Hunter Shattuck and junior Matthew Perrine tied for seventh place at 3-under 207. Perrine carded a final round 1-over 71, while Shattuck scored 2-over 72. Braden Bailey tied for 27th place at 4-over 214 after shooting 4-over 74 in the final round, and Garrett May shot 1-over 71 on Wednesday to tie for 38th place at 6-over 216.
The No. 9-ranked Bears (-17) matched No. 4 Stanford (-17) on the Cardinal's home course, and both teams easily qualified for the NCAA Championships. No. 27 Pepperdine (-5), No. 15 Oklahoma (-3) and No. 33 North Carolina (+3) also earned Championships berths by finishing among the top five teams.
