THE RUNDOWN
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Baylor men's golf took second place at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate after shooting 13-under-par 271 in Sunday's final round at Mirabel Golf Club. The Bears finished the tournament at 36-under 816, carding the second-best 54-hole team score in program history to finish five strokes behind tournament champion LSU (-41).
Three Baylor players finished among the top five individually. Sophomore Garrett May shot 5-under 66 in the final round to earn a career-best third-place finish at 12-under 201. May's 201 was the third-best 54-hole individual score in program history. Sophomore Braden Bailey and senior Hunter Shattuck tied for fourth place at 11-under 202, equaling the fourth-best 54-hole individual scores in program history. Shattuck made seven birdies on his way to a final-round 6-under 65, tying the sixth-best round in program history, and Bailey carded a final round of 2-under 69.
Freshman Cooper Dossey shot 2-over 73 in the final round and finished the tournament tied for 28th place at even-par 213, while junior Matthew Perrine recorded the Bears' fourth countable score with a final round of even-par 71 to finish in 88th place at 17-over 230. Junior Jackson Heazel played as an individual and shot 4-over 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 59th place at 8-over 221.
The Bears (-36) finished behind only LSU (-41). BU recorded wins against Kent State (-24), Kansas (-15), South Carolina (-13), Georgia Tech (-8), Houston (+1), California (+6), Augusta (+7), South Florida (+9), UAB (+12), Georgia State (+20), Chattanooga (+24), Notre Dame (+25), Grand Canyon (+29) and Hawaii (+57).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor's 54-hole total of 816 was the second-best tournament score in program history, trailing only the 789 recorded on a par-70 course at 2006 The Maxwell.
- Baylor's final round 271 was the sixth-best team score in program history -- the Bears shot a 269 in the first round that ranks as the fifth-best round in BU history.
- May's 201 ranks as the third-best 54-hole score in program history, trailing only Ryan Baca's 199 at the 2006 UTSA Intercollegiate and Adam Meyer's 200 at the 2001 Baylor Invitational.
- Bailey and Shattuck tied for the fourth-best 54-hole scores in program history, equaling Jamie McLeary's 2002 at the 2001 Baylor Invitational.
- Baylor finished second in the 16-team field in par-3 scoring at 5-over 3.08, second in par-4 scoring at 6-under 3.96 and fourth in par-5 scoring at 16-under 4.64.
- Baylor made 67 birdies for the tournament, which trailed only LSU's 68 birdies.
- Shattuck and Bailey tied for the lead in the 93-player field with par-3 scoring averages of 2-under 2.83.
- May and Bailey tied for third in par-4 scoring at 5-under 3.85.
- May tied for third in par-5 scoring at 7-under 4.22, while Dossey tied for sixth at 6-under 4.33.
- May and Bailey tied for the tournament lead with 17 birdies over 54 holes, and Shattuck tied for seventh with 15 birdies.
- May recorded an eagle on the 558-yard, par-5 seventh hole, one of six eagles made in the final round.
STAT OF THE DAY
3 -- the number of Baylor players who recorded top-five individual finishes while also carding some of the best 54-hole totals in program history. May finished in third place at 201, which was the third-best 54-hole total in school history, while Shattuck and Bailey each carded 202, equaling the fourth-best 54-hole total all-time at Baylor.
