2016 Baseball Summer League Update No. 1

WACO, Texas -- With Baylor baseball's first season under Steve Rodriguez complete, 11 of the returning players for 2017 have been assigned to play in various summer collegiate leagues across the country. The yearly tradition allows players to keep improving their skills in a live-game atmosphere against some of the country's top talent.

None of the Baylor players have begun playing for their respective teams as leagues begin action over the next two weeks, but below are the current assignments and achievements for the Bears.

A trio of players is in Alaska competing in the Alaska Baseball League. Freshman RHP Blake Allen and sophomore C/1B Cameron Miller are both on the Peninsula Oilers while freshman SS Josh Bissonette is on the Matsu Miners. In his first season after redshirting for the Bears, Allen posted 21.1 innings over 13 appearances and one start with a 6.33 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 2016. In limited action, Miller had two runs, five hits, two doubles and four RBI over 19 games and five starts. Bissonette played and started all but one of the team's 53 games at shortstop, notching 28 runs, 37 hits, three doubles, three home runs, 22 RBI, 29 walks and a .236 batting average.

Two players are in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League as sophomore RHP Troy Montemayor and junior RHP Drew Robertson are with the Albany Dutchmen. A first-team All-Big 12 selection and Stopper of the Year watch list member, Montemayor leads the Big 12 with 14 saves and ranks tied for seventh in the country in his first season in the closer role. In 24 appearances covering 23 innings, he had a 1-1 record and 0.78 ERA while allowing four runs on 15 hits and nine walks with 22 strikeouts and a .188 opponent batting average. He converted his first eight career save attempts and 14 of his first 15, which tied for third on Baylor's single-season saves list and eighth on BU's career saves list. Robertson posted a 6.50 ERA and 0-1 mark in 14 relief appearances over 18 innings with 14 strikeouts in his first season at BU.

Freshman OF Richard Cunningham is playing for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League. After redshirting in 2015, Cunningham enjoyed a breakout first season at Baylor as he hit .287 with 40 runs, 51 hits, nine doubles, five triples, five home runs, 26 RBI, 19 walks and three steals in 52 games and 51 starts, mostly in center field.

Sophomore OF/1B Kameron Esthay is in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. A second-team All-Big 12 choice, Esthay hit .307 in 49 games and 47 starts, mainly in the corner outfield spots. He set career marks with 59 hits, 14 doubles, 31 RBI and 19 walks while also scoring 20 runs, hitting one triple and three homers.

Sophomore RHP Joe Heineman is with the Walla Walla Sweets in the West Coast League. In his first season at BU, Heineman registered a 3-3 mark with a 3.48 ERA over 28 relief appearances. He gave up 21 runs on 38 hits and 20 walks with 36 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.

Freshman RHP Kyle Hill is playing for the Strasburg Express of the Valley Baseball League. Hill went 1-4 with a 5.28 ERA over 15 appearances and eight starts as he allowed 29 runs on 49 hits and 27 walks with 31 strikeouts in 44.1 innings.

Sophomore 3B Steven McLean is with the Menlo Park Legends in the California Collegiate League. An All-Big 12 second team selection, McLean put up career numbers across the board with a .308 batting average, 31 runs, 62 hits, nine doubles, three triples, two homers, 24 RBI and 12 walks in 53 games and 52 starts.

Freshman 1B/DH T.J. Raguse is in the Texas Collegiate League with the Victoria Generals. Raguse notched a .300 batting average in 36 games and 25 starts, mainly at DH. He posted 19 runs, 27 hits, eight doubles, one homer, 18 RBI and 19 walks.
