THE RUNDOWN
MANHATTAN, Kan.
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor baseball scratched a 7-5 10-inning win over Kansas State on Friday night at Tointon Stadium in the series opener. The Bears (18-20, 5-8) overcame a 4-2 third-inning deficit to take down the Wildcats (16-22, 3-10) in a scrappy game.

BU started out with a 2-0 lead on a first-inning RBI double from Aaron Dodson and third-inning RBI single from Kameron Esthay. However, KSU dropped four runs in the bottom of the third with the big damage coming on a three-run home run by Jake Scudder.

It didn't take long for the Bears to even the score, though. In the fourth, McLean roped a two-out RBI single. In the fifth, Joe Sabatini hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

The Wildcats regained the lead in the sixth on two walks, a single and bases-loaded walk with no outs. Then came a huge sequence for the Bears. Reliever Joe Heineman came in and immediately induced a pop up. He then struck out the next batter swinging but the ball got away from catcher Matt Menard, who quickly pounced on it and tossed back to Heineman at home plate for the tag and a double play.

In the eighth, Richard Cunningham led off with a bunt single and scored on an Esthay RBI double to knot the score.

In the 10th, Cunningham once again started a rally, this time with an HBP. McLean dropped sacrifice bunt down the first base line that turned into a hit as the pitcher slid into McLean while fielding the ball. After a strikeout and ground out that put both runners in scoring position, Dodson walked to load the bases. Menard then came to the plate and hit a chopper to third base but the throw one-hopped into first base and was not scooped, allowing two runs to score and leaving K-State unable to respond.

BU reliever Kyle Ott (4-2) earned the win, giving up a hit and three walks in 1.1 innings. Troy Montemayor picked up his ninth save with a perfect 10th. KSU reliever Jordan Floyd (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs (both unearned) on a hit and walk with one strikeout in 0.2 frames.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"One of the big plays was the strikeout double play. That was a bases loaded situation with less than two outs and they are trying to force contact. We were able to get out of that with only one run. That was absolutely huge. It was a great thing for our bullpen to come out and keep us in the game tonight." ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor head coach Steve Rodriguez
