Box Score

AMES, Iowa ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" No. 19 Baylor softball (29-7, 3-0 Big 12) opened a three-game weekend series with Iowa State (15-15, 0-1 Big 12) with a dominating 16-4 (5) victory over the Cyclones on Friday evening at Cyclone Sports Complex.

Heather Stearns (14-2) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and four runs, but only one earned run.

Abby Langkamp closed out the final 2.0 innings, allowing no hits or runs.

The Baylor offense put the leadoff batter on in all five innings, scoring two or more runs in all five frames.

In the first, Jessie Scroggins led off with a double to left-center, followed by a two-run shot by Ari Hawkins, putting Baylor up 2-0.

In the second, Caitlin Charlton led off with a single, with Robin Landrith reaching safely on an error during an attempted sac bunt.

A walk by Kyla Walker would load the bases, bringing up Jessie Scroggins.

A sac fly deep to left field would score Charlton easily, with Landrith scoring on a wild pitch on the next batter.

With a runner on third, Shelby Friudenberg launched a two-run bomb to dead center field, pushing the Baylor lead to 6-0.

A solo shot by the Cyclones in the bottom of the second would reduce the BU lead to 6-1, but the Lady Bears answered back in the top of the third.

Charlton led off with a double to left field, with Walker driving her in two batters later on a ground ball up the middle.

After Walker was caught stealing at third, Jessie Scroggins launched her first home run of the game to left-center, pushing the Baylor lead to 8-1.

The Cyclones would push back in the bottom of the inning, picking up three runs on two hits and two Baylor errors, but the offense would stall out at four runs.

Baylor's offense seemed to just be getting started, entering the fourth with an 8-4 advantage.

A walk for Linsey Hays and Jessica Tomchesson, followed by a hit-by-pitch for Charlton would load the bases.

Landrith reached on an error to right field, picking up the sacrifice fly RBI to score Riley Browder, pinch running for Hays.

A single by Walker scored Tomchesson, keeping the bases loaded.

Scroggins was back at the plate, launching a grand slam home run to center field, putting BU's lead at 14-4.

Putting the game completely out of reach in the top of the fifth, Morgan Groppe roped a single into left field, with Sydney Christensen following up with a double into the gap in left-center.

Scroggins grounded out to the first baseman, but brought home Groppe.

Sarah Beth Toben drilled a single into right field to score Christensen and push the lead to 16-4, standing as the final score.
