THE RUNDOWN
MIAMI, Fla. -- Baylor women's golf shot 5-over 289 in Tuesday's final round at the Hurricane Invitational, giving the Bears a 12th place finish with a three-round total of 29-over-par 881 at the Biltmore Golf Course.
Laura Lonardi finished in third place after carding a third round of 2-under-par 69, totaling a final score of 6-under-par 207. It was her third top-10 finish of the season and the 11th of her four-year Baylor career. Lonardi finished eight strokes back of the tournament medalist, Northwestern's Hannah Kim (-14).
Giovana Maymon shot 1-over 72 in her final round, totaling 11-over 224 on the tournament and climbing seven spots to finish in 55th place. Maria Vesga tied for 64th with a final score of 13-over 226 after a third-round score of 6-over 77. Maggie Beth Byers rose 12 spots to tie for 66th after shooting even-par 71 in her third round, totaling a final score of 14-over 227. Natalia Perez finished tied for 75th after carding a third-round score of 6-over 77 and a final score of 17-over 230. Lauren Whyte, who competed as an individual, carded a third-round score of 9-over-par 80 to finish in 87th place at 27-over 240.
Northwestern (-24) won the tournament by 21 strokes over Iowa State (-3). Miami (+2) finished third, followed by Tulane (+7), East Carolina (+11), South Florida (+12), Michigan (+15), Oklahoma (+20), Louisville (+21) and Purdue (+24) rounding out the top 10. Minnesota (+26) finished in 11th place, three strokes in front of Baylor (+29). The Bears placed ahead of Texas Tech (+30), Texas State (+40), Virginia Tech (+44) and Florida International (+48).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor finished second in par-5 scoring at 8-under 4.82.
- The Bears made 177 pars over 54 holes placing them in a tie for fourth in pars-recorded.
- Laura Lonardi tied for fifth in par-3 scoring, tied for fourth in par-4 scoring and tied third in par-5 scoring at 1-under 2.92, 1-under 3.97 and 4-under 4.56, respectively.
- Maria Vesga tied for fourth in par-5 scoring at 4-under 4.56.
- Lonardi made 12 birdies over 54 holes, placing her in a tie for sixth in birdies-recorded.
- Natalia Perez made par on 38 of 54 holes, tied for ninth-most in the 90-player field.
- Maggie Beth Byers made 37 pars, tied for 12th-most in the field.
STAT OF THE DAY
11 -- the number of top-10 finishes Laura Lonardi has in her Baylor career. Her third-place at the Hurricane Invitational was the third-best of her career behind a pair of second-place finishes at the 2015 Big 12 Championship and the 2015 Alamo Invitational.
