THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas
ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor baseball garnered its first road win of 2016 in a 5-1 decision over Sam Houston State on Monday at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bears (5-3) received stellar pitching from Kyle Ott, Blake Allen and Troy Montemayor to down the Bearkats (3-6).

Baylor struck first with a two-out, solo home run by Aaron Dodson in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Then followed up with a run in the third after Steven McLean walked to start the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Levi Gilcrease, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Richard Cunningham.

Meanwhile, Ott tossed three scoreless innings in a planned short start, adding four strikeouts while allowing just three baserunners. Allen took over in the fourth and cruised through the SHSU order until giving up a run in the seventh on a double and RBI ground out.

Leading just 2-1 entering the ninth, the Bears rallied with two outs for three runs to put the game away. Justin Arrington started it with a walk, McLean singled to shortstop, and after a pitching change, Gilcrease delivered a huge RBI single through the left side. On the throw home, McLean moved to third and Gilcrease moved to second. Following another pitching change, Cunningham roped a two-run single to left to cap the scoring.

Montemayor took over on the mound in the ninth and worked a flawless frame to seal the win.

Ott (1-0) earned the win, giving up no runs on one hit, one walk and one HBP with four strikeouts in three innings. Allen threw five innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout. SHSU starter Greg Belton (0-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in 4.1 innings.
