THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -- Baylor baseball started the weekend right with a 16-2 win over Stony Brook on Friday evening at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (2-3) used six runs in the first inning and five runs in the sixth behind a nice start from
Daniel Castano to topple the Seawolves (1-3).
BU took control of the game right way with a huge first inning, two-out rally. Kameron Esthay started it with a one-out walk and Matt Menard followed with a single. Jonathan Ducoff then delivered a two-out, two-run double right-center to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Following a walk by Richard Cunningham and Ben Carl HBP, Steven McLean hit an infield RBI single and another run scored on a bad throw at second base on the play. Josh Bissonette kept the rally alive with an RBI single and Levi Gilcrease capped it with an RBI bunt single for a 6-0 edge.
McLean was at it again in the second inning after Darryn Sheppard led off with a bunt single and Cunningham walked. McLean roped a two-run triple to the left-center gap for an 8-0 lead.
In the fourth, leadoff walks by McLean and Bissonette and a one-out walk by Esthay loaded the bases. Sheppard took full advantage with a two-out, two-run single to center, giving BU a 10-0 lead.
The sixth inning rally started with a leadoff single by Bissonette. After a one-out single by Aaron Dodson, Joe Sabatini singled up the middle to score Bissonette. Sheppard followed with a single and then a pair of errors at shortstop allowed the Bears to score four more runs for a 15-0 edge.
SBU added two runs in the seventh off Theron Kay, but BU got one back on a West Tunnell sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Castano (1-1) earned the win as he gave up no runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings. SBU starter Tyler Honahan (1-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
