HUNTSVILLE, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" No. 24 Baylor softball (6-3) was lifted by an explosive performance at the plate, with four different Lady Bears launching home runs to drum past Sam Houston State, 13-4 (5).
Jessie Scroggins drilled a three-run home run, Sarah Smith and Robin Landrith added two-run shots, and Linsey Hays posted a solo bomb to pace the BU offense.
Kendall Potts (3-0) got the start in the circle for the Lady Bears, going 3.0 innings and allowing only one run, while striking out two.
The Bearkats (2-6) struck first in the bottom of the first, with Dani Allen hitting a solo home run. But the lead for SHSU would be short-lived, with Baylor posting two-consecutive four-run innings.
In the top of the second, Riley Browder drove in a run on an infield grounder, scoring Jessica Tomchesson. The next batter, Scroggins, drilled a double into the left field gap, clearing the bases to score Caitlin Charlton and Landrith.
Attempting to steal third, Scroggins easily beat the throw and ended up scoring on the throwing error by the SHSU catcher.
Hays led off the top of the third with a solo shot to dead center field, extending the Baylor lead to 5-1. In the same inning, Smith walked and would score from second on a single to center field by Tomchesson. The next batter, Landrith, got in her own home run, clearing the right field fence for a two-run shot.
Smith's two run bomb in the top of the fourth and Scroggins' three-run rocket in the fifth rounded out Baylor's scoring count at 13-4, setting up Sarah Beth Toben to come on in relief to close out the game in five innings.
