WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" No. 21 Baylor softball (5-3) was handed its second tough, extra innings loss of the weekend to North Texas (6-4), falling in the championship game of the Getterman Classic, 7-6 (8).

In a game that BU dominated nearly from start to finish, it took several late-inning heroics from UNT to steal the game away from the Lady Bears.

After falling to UNT in round-robin play yesterday, BU would play as the visiting team, picking up the bats to start the game.

For BU, a career day for Jessie Scroggins led the offensive attack, going 3-for-5 at the plate, including a double, triple, and scoring four of Baylor's six runs.

Sarah Smith hit her first home run of the season in the top of the second, extending BU's lead to 2-0.

In the top of the third, Scroggins roped a triple deep into the corner, with Lindsey Cargill following up with a bunt single, advancing to second to catch UNT's defense off-guard.

Shelby Friudenberg hit a sacrifice fly deep to right field, easily scoring Scroggins and advancing Cargill to third. Linsey Hays beat the throw to first after UNT's shortstop misplaced a grounder, scoring Cargill to put BU up, 4-0.

UNT would finally crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, with three singles bringing a run home.

The Scroggins-Cargill tandem was back in the top of the fifth, with both reaching base and Friudenberg driving in Scroggins.

UNT would narrow the gap in the bottom of the fifth, driving in a run to make it 5-2 BU entering the sixth inning.

Looking to ice the game, BU kept its foot on the pedal, plating another run in the top of the sixth. Jessica Tomchesson poked a single over the shortstop's head, changing places with Scroggins on a fielder's choice.

Cargill came in clutch again, drilling a double in the left-center gap to score Scroggins from first and making it 6-2, BU.

Kendall Potts shut down the Mean Green batters in the bottom of the sixth, but lost her handle in the bottom of the seventh.

Down to its last three outs, UNT picked up two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. A ground out would put runners at second and third, scoring one to narrow the BU lead to 6-3.

Karly Williams would draw the sides even with a three-run blast to left field, forcing the teams into extra innings for the second-straight game.

BU would load the bases in the top of the eighth, but couldn't catch a break, bringing up UNT in the bottom of the eighth, still tied 6-6.

Selman would reenter in the eighth trying to keep the Lady Bears alive for the ninth. With the international tie-breaker softball rule, a runner is placed at second to start the eighth inning.

UNT would sac bunt the runner to third, putting a runner just a base away with one out. Two walks would load the bases, still looking for a second out.

A heads-up play by Sarah Smith corralled a ground ball back at her at third base, getting the lead runner at the plate to keep the bases loaded, now with two outs.

Selman couldn't regain her control, though, walking home the winning run for UNT.

The Getterman Classic All-Tournament team featured five Baylor Lady Bears, including Lindsey Cargill who set a new Getterman Classic record with a .800 batting average.
