WACO, Texas - Baylor softball (1-1) dropped the middle game of a season-opener weekend series, falling to McNeese State (2-1), 3-1.
LSU transfer Kelsee Selman (0-1) made her debut in the circle for the Lady Bears, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing only four hits and zero earned runs, while posting six K's.
Costly defensive errors by Baylor gave the Cowgirls an early advantage, scoring a run in each of the first two innings off of defensive miscues.
The BU offense kept steady pressure on McNeese throughout the game, but left nine runners on and only managing to plate one in the bottom of the fifth.
Lindsey Cargill roped a single down the right field line, picking up a bonus base on a throwing error by MSU rightfielder Tori Yanitor.
Shelby Friudenberg stepped up as the next batter and reached on another error by Yanitor, this time misplaying Friudenberg's shallow right field fly ball.
Linsey Hays put BU's lone run on the scoreboard, launching a ball to the warning track in dead center field that was chased down by Justyce McClain, easily scoring Cargill from third.
BU's run would end there, as McNeese would go on to plate a third run in the top of the sixth, and blanking Baylor in the sixth and seventh.
STAT OF THE DAY
10 - with a deep sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning, Linsey Hays posted her 10th career sacrifice fly, tying for No. 1 on BU's career list to draw even with Chelsi Lake, Courtney Nieten, and Jordan Vannatta.

"Sometimes when you don't play well enough to win but yet you come away with a win like we did last night, it sends the wrong message. Sometimes a loss can do more good for your team than a win. I think this is an example of that. I thought, knowing that we could have easily lost that game last night, we would have shown up with a little more swagger and determination to show who we really are. Just the opposite happened. I think it was probably because of the outcome of the game last night. That [McNeese State] is a good team. We have a lot of respect for them and we knew that they were going to be good coming in. They played a solid ballgame and forced some mistakes, and we couldn't capitalized. We have a lot of work to do. It is early in the season. We know where to go and we have a game tomorrow so we want to improve from today to tomorrow taking one step at a time." -head coach Glenn Moore on the tough loss after last night's dramatic win

"I thought she threw okay, very good at times and rough around the edges at other times. I kind of expected that. We were ugly in all parts of the game today. We had sloppy defensive play, wild pitches, we had the strikeout that we did not end up getting the out at first that ended up hurting us. There wasn't a lot of fight in our at-bats like we have seen in our scrimmages against our pitching, which is very good pitching. That is what I challenged them with. Bring back that intensity. It was a great day, we had a great crowd. We had no excuse to not come out and play harder than we did. We just got outplayed today." -head coach Glenn Moore on Kelsee Selman's pitching debut
