Aug. 21, 2015 WACO, Texas - Over the summer, several returning Baylor baseball players have been playing in various summer collegiate leagues across the country. The yearly tradition allows players to keep improving their skills in a live-game atmosphere against some of the country's top talent. Below are the summer highlights of the Bears that were in action.
Richard Cunningham, hit .322 with 15 RBI, seven doubles and 30 runs in 40 appearances for the So Cal Catch. Cunningham was also named to the All-California Collegiate Team and was named a CCL All-Star. Another member of the Catch, Cameron Miller hit .209 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 33 appearances.
Troy Montemayor, who played for the Hornell Dodgers, was named second-team All-New York Collegiate Baseball League. Montemayor finished 6-1 with a 1.89 ERA, led the team in wins and was also named to the NYCBL All-Star game.
West Tunnell, hit .356 with 14 doubles, three triples, five homeruns, 36 runs and 39 RBI over 45 games for the Bend Elks. His 39 RBI tied him for third most in the league, while his average was tied for third best in the league; he was also named to the south roster for the West Coast League All-Star game. Steven McLean, who hit .318 with five doubles, 11 RBI, 25 runs and five stolen bases for the Harrisonburg Turks, was named to the All-Valley Baseball League second team and to the South roster for the VBL All-Star game. Kameron Esthay hit .214 with four doubles and 17 RBI and also made two relief pitching appearances for the Turks, registering three strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work. Aaron Dodson, who played 25 games for the Turks, hit .221 with two triples, two home runs and 11 RBI during the season.
Theron Kay and the Neptune Beach Pearl were crowned the champions of the California Collegiate League. Kay ended his season with a 5-1 record, 1.70 ERA and 27 strikeouts.
Justin Arrington (Hyannis Harbor Hawks) hit .186 with two RBI in 19 appearances, Darryn Sheppard (Wareham Gatemen) hit .214 in only nine appearances, Nick Lewis (Cotuit Kettleers) went 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 10 appearances and Daniel Castano (Chatham Anglers) went 2-4 with a 3.34 ERA and 25 strikeouts in eight appearances in the Cape Cod League.
Jonathan Ducoff hit .230 with one home run and four RBI for the Holyoke Blue Sox in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Rounding out the summer leaguers, Blake Allen was 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA for the Albany Dutchmen, Joe Sabatini hit .291 with two home runs and 13 RBI for the Bethany Bulls and Lane Kelly batted .250 with the Austin Gold Sox.
