April 30, 2015 WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball head coach Steve Smith announced the signing of San Jacinto College right-handed pitcher Alex Phillips on Thursday. The addition gives the Bears six incoming players for 2016, including four pitchers.
"Alex is a solid four-pitch guy who should make an instant impact in our program," said Smith. "He's a mature young man with experience on the mound at a high level."
The 6-4, 225-pound hurler from Nacogdoches, Texas, is currently a sophomore playing at San Jacinto College and has 11 appearances (all starts). He is 6-3 with a 2.41 ERA in 56.0 innings with 57 strikeouts. Prior to joining the Gators, Phillips spent his 2014 freshman season with Arkansas as he went 3-0 with a 3.52 ERA in 30.2 innings with 17 strikeouts in 10 appearances (eight starts).
As a prep, Phillips was a standout pitcher at Nacogdoches Central Heights High School. A three-year letterwinner at NCHHS as a first baseman and pitcher, Phillips helped lead the program to three straight first place district finishes. As a pitcher, he was a two-time second-team All-State and three-time first-team All-District choice. As a hitter, he was a 2012 second-team All-State selection. In 2013, Phillips was named to the 2013 Texas High School 1A-3A All-Star Game and earned District MVP. In 2011, he helped NCHHS to a state runner-up finish and was a first-team All-State-Tournament selection.
Phillips joins the five Texas high school standouts Baylor signed last fall for the 2016 campaign: RHP Collin Garrett (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS), RHP Kyle Hill (Corpus Christi, Texas/Calallen HS), LHP Cody Moos (Castroville, Texas (Medina Valley HS), 1B/OF/LHP T.J. Raguse (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) and SS Jon Skidmore (Highland Park, Texas/Highland Park HS).
