April 26, 2015 WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team is headed to the 2015 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, which runs Monday through Wednesday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Southern Hills has hosted the championship twice, most recently in 2006, along with playing host to the PGA Championship and USGA Open Championship in recent years. The three-day, 72-hole tournament will begin with 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday and a final 18 on Wednesday.
"It is exciting to be there, if for no other reason than to play that golf course" head coach Mike McGraw said. "If you aren't a better golfer when you leave Southern Hills, then you weren't out there paying attention. It has hosted seven or eight majors, and it has had some really great champions too, so it's a special treat for the guys."
The 18th-ranked Bears are seeking their first conference title in 14 years after winning two tournaments during the spring season, most recently the Border Olympics. Baylor's last Big 12 title came back in 2001 in Hutchison, Kan.
"There's no question we could win," McGraw said. "We've beaten every team that is there at least once during the year. We've competed well, but I think we are just scratching the surface on what we can do. We would definitely be one of the teams that you would look at and think, `yeah that is a team that could win.' We will need to take care of our business, and the 36-hole day is pretty important because you are out there all day long. You want to get that off to a good start."
Baylor enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin team rankings, where Baylor is ranked 18th nationally. Seven of the nine teams competing in the Big 12 Championship are ranked among the nation's top 50 teams, including No. 3 Texas, No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 21 Oklahoma State, No. 32 TCU and No. 41 Iowa State. Kansas and Kansas State are the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds, respectively.
Baylor's lineup is led by Kyle Jones, who was recently selected for Team USA in the Palmer Cup and has finished among the top 15 individuals in all 10 events during the 2014-15 season. He's followed by Andreas Gjesteby, Mikkel-Bjerch-Andresen, Filippo Zucchetti and Frederik Andersen.
"I'm really excited to show all the progress we've made this year, and everyone is playing well right now," Jones said. "I believe in us. We've been playing really well, and we've beaten every team that's going to be there, so there is no reason for us not to be confident."
Monday's first round will begin at 8 a.m. CT. The fourth-seeded Bears are paired with No. 5 seed Oklahoma State and No. 6 seed TCU, and the group will begin on the 10th tee.
