Final Stats

THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas
- Baylor (14-22) earned a 2-1 win over Incarnate Word (11-24) Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears used a two-run first inning and stellar pitching to top the Cardinals.

Logan Brown started the game for BU with a leadoff double and scored on an Adam Toth single. After a ground out by Cameron Miller moved Toth to second, Mitch Price singled him home with two outs to give the Bears all the runs they'd need.

The lone run UIW scored came in the fourth after a leadoff walk and one-out single as Ethan McGill singled in the run. The Cardinals best chance to tie the game came in the seventh off reliever Troy Montemayor but the Bears held tight.

Montemayor gave up a two-out double and walk before getting Weston Pitts to ground a ball up the middle. Second baseman West Tunnell was shaded up the middle and ranged to his right to field it behind the bag and delivered a one-hop laser off his back foot that first baseman Mitch Price scooped to end the inning and preserve the lead.

BU starter Kody Hessemer (3-1) earned the win, allowing the one run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in five innings. Theron Kay, Montemayor, Sean Spicer and Brad Kuntz each tossed a scoreless frame in order to end the game. Kuntz picked up his first save of the season while striking out two batters. UIW starter Kris Looper (0-4) took the loss after giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in eight innings.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"If [Kody] Hessemer would've thrown six more fastballs instead of six more offspeed stuff, he wouldn't have given up a run and we would've ended up with under 100 pitches. [Troy] Montemayor was in the [big] spot. He pitched around a guy with two outs, then started attacking with the fastball, I mean just attacked. Then [Brad] Kuntz came in and pitched a good ninth for us." - Baylor head coach Steve Smith

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor heads to Stillwater, Oklahoma, this weekend for a three-game series against Oklahoma State. Games are set for 7 p.m. CT Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
